Remington 742 question

Ok so I have this 30-06 that is a Remington 742 and for the life of me I cannot get the breach to lock in the open position..

I can get it locked with a empty magazine in, but for cleaning that is a PITA and allows misc cleaning stuff to fall into the magazine..

And I prefer to use cable locks over trigger locks, so it would be nice to have it open so I could use that..

Is there something Im missing with this rifle or is just not possible?

The magazine has to be in the gun before the bolt will lock open . It is the magazine follower that holds the bolt open ,and the bolt release is on the side of the magazine.

So - your gun is working as designed.

As stated above this is true. I take my mag out and the bolt stays back on my 7400.

Yep, it's the way it's designed. You have to keep the chamber real clean for the 742 to cycle properly. Tight chamber=Accurate rifle; Tight chamber=Maintenance; Therefore, Accurate rifle=Maintenance.
