I still hunt deer with the early fifties era Model 760 that I've had since the late sixties. The older models were made before the dawn of the scope age and their stocks have comb dimensions more appropriate for use with iron sights. Accordingly, my rifle, chambered in 30-06 Springfield, has always wore a Williams FoolProof receiver sight. In terms of fast repeat shots, the Models 760/7600 will put any lever-action rifle to shame, they can be safely used with bullets having pointed configurations and they are plenty accurate to boot.
Due to excessive muzzle blast, I'm no fan of short barrels on rifles chambered with cartridges like the 30-06. In the Michigan cedar swamps where I do most of my whitetail hunting, I've never felt handicapped with the 22" factory barrel on my Model 760. YMMV as they say.
