I have a chance to buy a Remington 770 in 30-06 for $300. It has only been fired 7 times by the owner and I know it has not been abused. he bought it right before Christmas. Reason for selling is he fell in love with a new BAR.

Any advice?

I've never owned one, but I do not care for the look of them at all.

I guess it's not a bad price, but it's not really a steal either.

They'll probably get the job done for a casual hunter who doesn't shoot much. They are bordering on junk though IMO. I'd much rather have a well worn 700 for just a little more money. You could always refinish it or turn it into a custom.

It's a re-badged Remington 710.

There are better rifles out there for equal or less money.

The Stevens Model 200 is one example.

A nice used 700ADL is head and shoulders above a 710/770 in fit, finish, and quality.

I haven't heard many good things about the 710/770. You'd be better of saving a few more dollars and getting a 700 IMHO.

I've heard nothing good about 770s or the 710s and have been told, repeatedly, to save the extra money to buy one. I've gotten very little help getting ideas of prices on a .30-06 (I went to Dick's and asked for the most basic thing. The gun clerk brought out a stainless steel with a real tree stock and Nikon scope that was over $700) but I have seen, at a local Wal-Mart, a Remington 700 with a black synthetic stock, blued barrel, and scope in .270 for what I think was $415. I'm not experienced with either but why half-ass it when you can get the real deal for a bit more?

I looked at one and when I pulled the bolt back hard the bolt pulled completely out. To me the receiver felt like it was plastic, the trigger was plastic and it felt like junk.
