This seems to be one of Remington's "budget" rifle offerings. Haven't heard much feedback on it, pro or con. Anyone have any positive/negative experiences with the 783?

Remlins iteration of the Marlin X7.
They aquired Marlin, discontinued the X7, and now sell an even cheaper knock-off of the Savage M110.

I preferred the Marlins, simply as they had a better feeling stock.

The 783 is an entry level economy rifle. Most reports put them on par with Savage Axis or slightly more expensive Ruger American.

Given my experience with the Savage action, I'd look elsewhere. I don't like the non-camming extraction of the Savage Action.
I like the Howa actions, though they are a tad bit heavy.
You actually get what you pay for in a bolt action sporter.

Thanks. Didn't realize that it was just a warmed-over Savage.

I am a satisfied paper shooter with my 783. my 30.06 rounds go where I want and I haven't had one issue with the rifle. I only sanded the stock to relieve some side pressure on the barrel. now it floats free.

Quite satisfactory. I'm looking forward to my first deer hunt with it and have no qualms.

It uses the same method of attaching the barrrel to the receiver that Savage uses. That is the major thing they have in common. I wouldn't call it a warmed over Savage. If you're talking about the Savage 110/10 series, the Savage is the better rifle. The 783 is on par with the Savage Axis.

Around here you can't hardly give away a 710,or 770..I think the 783 is concidered by most as just a slightly modified renamed 770..The Mossberg ATRs were in the same catagory around here, and I figured they had ruin there chances in the budget rifle market, but I guess I was wrong, because them newer Mossbergs have become somewhat popular around here..I guess if the 783 is any good it will earn a position in the market..

I can't blame people for thinking that given the abysmal and well earned reputation of the 710/770, but it's not true. The 783 is a Marlin X7 after Remington has given it the dose of ugly they seem to think an inexpensive rifle requires. It's far superior to the 710/770.

IMO, they would have been better off to leave it alone as a Marlin. That way it wouldn't compete directly with the Rem 700 and wouldn't be tainted by the 710/770's reputation.

Comparing the Remington 783 with the Savage Axis, which one comes out ahead?

The Savage Axis is less expensive and comes in a lot more variations. Price is a main criteria in the budget bolt action category.

I have a 783 in .223. It shoots very well and is decently built. The trigger is similar to the accutrigger on Savage and broke cleanly at 3.5# right out of the box. The bolt is fairly smooth. The stock rattles, I put some old gun case foam in it to quiet it down some.
I shot an axis with the standard trigger and it felt like 2 files grinding on each other and about 10 # of pull. You will pay more for the Savage with the accutrigger that the suggested retail of $329 for the Rem with it's cheap scope. I'm real happy with what it is for the price. I think it stands above the 770.
Here's a few deals.
