Remington 788 - Good Buy?

Hey, I am visiting some relatives and I found a pretty good condition Remy 788 carbine in 7mm08. The barrel and action look pretty good, while the stock had some scratches. The guy wants $250 for it. Does it sound like a good buy?

hell yes its a good buy. i have 3 788 rifles...they have a "cult" like following and are dandy shooters...not unusual to see these rifles in the 500 to 600 dollar range assuming they are complete and functional..

$250 sounds like a heckuva good deal. A shooting buddy had one in 243 and it was a real fine shooter. He harvested a lot of deer with that gun.

250$ is a good deal. Ive owned a couple 788's and they are highly underrated. Smooooooooth action, very accurate light and handy. I'd just make sure the rifling looks good. Buy it!!!!

Run and buy it now. I have a 308 bought new in '76. Still a better than fine shooter. Spend a little time sanding on the stock out and tung oil with about 4 to 7 coats and wood wax. Makes for a nice looking stock.

A few months ago a buddy of mine was looking for his first hunting rifle. I scouted some LGS's and found a nice 788 in .308 WITH a decent Bushnell scope, great rifling and a wood stock for $250. I told him when he went to buy it to not listen to a word the salesmen were going to say because they were gonna try to sell him a new Savage or somthing. Wich they did and he bought the 788. He could not be happier and shoots it all the time. BUY IT! hahaha or ill find out where it is and steal it from you!

Ok I will grab it tomorrow. I bought a used one in .243 in 1978 and it has killed about 30 deer. I wad not sure about a carbine model, and price.

I meant to add that a 788 cleans up nicely with a good hunk of wood.

Nope. 7-08 is the least desirable configuration of the 788, right next to .30-30. Run away as fast as you can right after sending me contact information for the seller.......................BUY IT!

The most accurate rifle I ever owned was a 788 in .222 Rem. That thing would put 5 shots of Winchester factory ammo into one ragged hole at 100 yards. Never should have sold it! I could never get hand loads to shoot as accurately.

Well, are you convinced yet? One of mine, a .243 carbine (19" bbl), does 5/8" groups with cheap PMC 100 gr. First load I tried and I never found a need to look for another. That's darn near deer-eyeball accuracy... There may have been one, but I've never heard of an inaccurate one...

My dad had one in .22-250 that was a less than 1/2 moa rifle with handloads, no modifications.

My .308 788 carbine is a very accurate rifle. I would expect the same of a 7-08.

Mine has been an NRA over-the-course High Power match rifle, scoped hunting rifle, a pseudo-scout rifle, trainer, truck gun ... It's just a good all-around rifle.

I bought an 788 about 20 years ago, .223, most accurate rifle I own! My buddy had one, a .223, told me about it, so found one at a gun show, best $200 I ever spent. I put a new Timney trigger on mine about a year ago, now hole into a hole shooting session is very common. Go buy it!
