I have a Remington 870 12 guage Super Mag that won't eject the shells. The ejecetion port opens about half way and stops. Happens on all shells (2 3/4", slugs, 3") The rim of the shell is getting caught on the ejector rivet or the bars along side of the ejector. Is there an easy fix or do I need to take it to a gunsmith? Could I grind down the bars and rivet?

Here's a pic for orientation and so you can tell what I'm taking a pic of close up

And here's a closup of the problem area

I'm in a place where I can't view the photos, but this is odd. If you bought it new, I would take it to the guy you bought it from. As for how easy it would be to fix yourself, I'm not confident enough to start messing with rivets myself. I would look at the parts charts at Brownell's to see if there's a difference between a regular 870 and the magnum. If they use the same extractor setup, it should be so easy to find, any smith will have one in his parts bucket. If it's slightly different, I would let the smith decide what they can and can't fix.

I guess what I mean is, it's easy if you are willing to just order a new bolt and extractor assembly from Brownell's. A smith might take one look at it, file something down, not charge you and it will be fine. (Don't count on that though. :)

How about the extractor on the bolt itself? Is it grabbing the right side of the shell effectively enough to flip out the shell to the right? I took a look at my wingmaster. It looks just like your mag model. Good luck.

Extractor looks good

The extractor looks like it is getting a good "lock" on the shell. Thanks for comparing to your Remington. I thought maybe it was broken or missing a piece.

I bought this about 10 years ago and it was a problem from the get go. I stuck it away and haven't looked at it since then. My grandpa wants all the boys to go hunting this year so I thought I'd better break it out and see what I could do with it.

Looks like the front part of your ejector assembly is broken off. After I compared you photo to my 870 Express yours looks broken. Look at your close up pic inside the receiver, the ejector should extend into the groove that is cut into your barrel. The way it is now it sounds like the missing section is causing a gap that the shell is getting hung up on. You can take it to a gunsmith and have it repaired. Mine broke a little differently than yours but the repair cost me about $50. It will most likely have to be re-riveted. Hope this makes sense to you. Maybe someone else will be able to post a pic of another 870.

Here is a picture of my 80's model wingmaster. IS yours the original barrel? ARe you sure someone has not changed the barrel etc? The portion of your picture in front of the rivet does not look right. My barrel comes on back almost to it. Your picture shows quite a bit of space there where the hull could hang. You mentioned magnum...Sure someone didnt put a different barrel on it? I am not sure what to tell you other than your picture is different than mine and mine works fine. Good luck!

I have look at close ups of you rpictures compared to mine...07AMF may have hit it on the head...looks like you may have the front portion ahead of the rivet missing. I can't imagine a gunsmith that is worth his pay not knowing how to fix an 870 rivet probably while you wait.

Gunsmith has been called

It is the original barrel. I went ahead and called a local gunsmith. He said he'd take a look at it and quote a price to fix it. I'll post updated pics once it's repaired just to close the thread up.

It would be cheaper to get the smith to take care of it rather than buying th part and the staking tool to change it. Probably cost about $50 to make it run again. Cheap compared to other repairs. The ejector spring looks fine, but the front of the ejector is broken.

Your MIM (cast metal alloy) ejector is broken and needs replacing. $50 and a refinishing of your receiver. Good luck in having it back firing in a month.

You should have been here six months ago when the experts were telling us that MIM ejectors didnt exist and they never broke. ;)

I just checked my 870 Super Mag and your ejector is for sure broken. Gosh, I hope mine doesn't break!
