I was looking at the Remington website, at the 870 marine magnum model, and some other 870s, and saw a statement that these guns are intended for personal use only and will not accept law enforcement accessories.

What are they talking about?

Can a pistol grip or folding stock be added to a Remington 870?

Mainly referencing the fact that the mag tubes are dimpled to preclude adding an extended tube. Beyond that I don't see any differences in my neutered 870 other than the plastic trigger gaurd which seems durable enough. Dimples are easily removed, it's just a stupid remmmy CYA statement, same as they make it hard to buy 870 Police and 700 PSS.

Greetings:

This means that some accessories that fit the 'police' models will not fit the 'express' models, and perhaps the Marine Magnum (not sure), without some modifications:

Extended magazine tube: will not fit Express without modification of fixed tube to remove 'dimples'.
etc.

RE: pistol grip or folding stock, do yourself a favor, use the search feature to scan for the previous posts that beat, er, uh, cover this 'feature' in detail :D You'll be able to read more than I can type here.

You've come to the right place to learn about 870s, lots of people here love 'em, me included.

Ask questions if you don't see what you need...

All the best,

The new 870s are good shotguns, the older ones made in pre PC days are oft great ones.

If starting from scratch, I'd rather get an old beater that spent too many years in a cruiser in bad 'hoods than a new Express, Remington QC has sadly degraded as well as PC mods like the locking safety and those dratted dimples.

PG stocks are egregious in the real world, folders not much better. See Archives for details.

The Marine Magnum doesn't have the dimples and comes already with a mag extension----maybe they are referring to the elongated forend that prevents use of a side saddle----that's fixed easily enough too.

Also noticed at the last trip to the emporium---a parkerized(well-maybe standard express finish) Express model with mag extention already in place for $329 or thereabouts.

I've been thinking about an 870 Marine Magnum to be used as a "house gun". If I ever wanted to use it for anything else, can I swap out barrels with it like any other 870? I guess blued barrels would look funny on a nickel-plated receiver, but can it be done?

Horny Toad

I recently converted my 870 duck gun into a HD gun by filing off the dimples and adding a tube extention, swapping out the stock for a Choate stock with pistol grip, adding a "tactical" foreend, and adding a sidesaddle.

OK, so does anyone know if one can swap barrels on an 870 Marine Magnum?

Horny Toad

Yep, it's an 870, swap away. If it already has the extended mag tube you may need a std. mag tube cap unless you want the full length tube on there with your 28" turkey barrel. A gun that ugly should irritate both trap snobs and game wardens. :D

Yes---you can swap barrels on a Marine Magnum----only real differences are the nickel finish and the mag extention.

Also have thoughts on the extra barrels----seems like if you're spending $200 give or take on a replacement barrel---you might as well get the whole gun for $300----seems just a more cost effective better deal.

Now---if your original barrel is damaged----the $200 for a new barrel would be cheap to get a good gun running again.

So I guess I wouldn't buy a replacement unless the original were damaged-----if I were looking for just a different configuration---I'd buy a whole new gun.

Yeah, I guess that makes sense. The thing is - I'm buying my first shotgun, and figuring I'll practice with it at the range, and have it first and foremost for home defense. What I'm trying to plan for though, is the day when I say to myself "Hey, I think I might want to start hunting". Now I could just go out and buy another shotgun, but if I could just change to say, a rifled barrel and shoot slugs, then great. I'm just trying to think this through, and it's tough because I really don't know much at all about shotguns.

870s do not breed, but they do multiply, Horny Toad. A couple things...

A rifled barrel is not essential for deer hunting in many places. Smoothbores work fine up to 50 yards or more with slugs, and practice. Some places still require buckshot, check with your local Critter Cops.

FYI, my loose record keeping shows average shot distance for the last decade runs maybe 32 yards, all weapons.

A short barreled, "Serious" shotgun, especially an 870, has lots of application for fun games, including hunting and clays. One of a shotgun's assets is versatility.

Add a longer barrel, and yes, the MM will take standard 870 barrels, you have a better waterfowler and clays tool. Or like folks have said, just get another 870. Practice with one is practice with the other, and fast doubles on clays with get you operating your "Serious" shotgun better.

HTH....
