I have a synthetic stock Remington 870. The stock has no sling swivel stud, and the barrel clamp doesn't have one either.

How do I attached a sling to this shotgun? Do I need to drill the stock?
thanks!

I had the same questions when I wanted to put a sling on my 870 with synthetic furniture.

I wound up picking up a sling by The Outdoor Connection. It has a buttstock strap, a new endcap with sling mount, and a nice sling you can quickly adjust with one hand. It should be available at a few places online- my favorite shooting supply site had it.

No drilling, and you can take it off quickly if desired.

hmmm i installed a sling mount in my synthetic buttstock and added a magazine cap with sling swivel.

now that i have a magazine extension i bought a tacstar barrel clamp that has a swivel mount. I'd recommend that.

If you want a single-point you can get mounts that go on between the stock and the receiver. Just remove stock, set sling mount, replace stock. And if you don't like it there isn't any permanent modification made.

Yeah, my new 870 has a mag extension built in by Remington, and i've been looking at the same thing. The barrel clamp shows a sling swivel on it on Remington's page, but my clamp doesn't have one. It does have the hole for it, though, so you'd think there would be a part you could stick in there.

Edit: Found a picture of what I have and what I need... I have the metal clamp, I need the little swivel stud in the plastic bag. I wonder if Remington sells those?

My 870P came with the factory mag extension clamp and had the sling mount. Brownell's (and I am sure others) also sell a plate that you can put between the mag cap and barrel (or mag extension and barrel) that puts the sling out to the side.

For the stock you'd have to get a wrap around sling.

Does the synthetic stock have a flat part that looks like it is made to be drilled for a sling swivel? Most sling swivel kits have a stud that is attached by a wood screw.

Here is one for an 870 express.

My only concern would be drilling into the stock to find out that the plastic was thin where you happened to drill. If the stock had a spot that looked like it was designed for a sling swivel, I'd drill away.

Here's a remington cap and stud kit:

That's what I did. I drilled the synthetic buttstock 2 1/4" from the end following the instructions that came with the Uncle Mike's swivel stud and it's tight as a wedge.

The synthetic stocks are easily drilled for a fixed swivel or a detachable swivel stud.
If you goof up and overdrill the hole, you can still install the stud by filling the hole with an epoxy base like Accra-Glass Gel and letting the stud solidify to the stock.

There are a myraid of plates,Tube clamps, replacement magazine caps, and kits for installing a swivel stud to the exsisting magazine caps on Remington guns.
There is no reason to use a slip on gunsling.
