The scenario: Remington 870 being used in the back of beyond and maybe out of the country, gun is relied on as primary weapon. No nearby gunsmiths and no way to order from Brownells.

What spare parts should go along? I have my own ideas about this but my 870 has never gone wrong, so I'm guessing.

So, what are the most commonly needed parts, or most common parts failures?

Thanks!

1 extractor. In 30 years of shooting 870s, that is what I replaced.

If your talking 1100, an extractor(might be the same one), and a fist full of o-rings.

I also replaced an extractor on a 11-58 Trap Gun. In the 90s ,that I'm pretty sure was the original.

What's the time frame?

Out of touch with civilization for a year. Nothing but Hoppe's 9 and some oil.

5 years. Take a spare bolt and carrier, TG and a mag spring.

10 years or more, take a spare 870....

Thanks for the replies! Any gunsmiths want to check in on what they always have to fix, or never have to?

Ooops! I have interfered with the timeframe by running the thing for a dozen years already. My thinking is the ejector is Mickey Mouse, and I do not like the look of it. And yet it has never given a moment's trouble.

Back when the upkeep of 30 some 870s were part of my job, our spare parts fit into a show box with room left over.

There was a TG, a bolt and carrier, a few beads and some mag springs.

I used to check out the ejectors by running a finger lightly over them. Roughness on the front corner meant a trip back to Ilion. Extractors got a visual check for the hook part and wiggled a bit to check that they could move as needed.

A little lube goes a long way.

Good luck...

Hello friends and neighbors // The Remington website lists trigger plate assemblys at $84-$91 and a breech bolt assembly at $97.

Add the smaller parts previously mentioned, plus shipping and you could almost buy another 870(used), with perhaps a different length barrel.
Depending on space ,strip one for parts or carry both 870s.

Minimum for me would be a mag. spring retainer, mag.tube end cap.(these can go flying)
Then extractor + tools, as first part to wear out.(can be stored in holes under the butt plate of a wooden stock)

Also considered parts, more for versatility than wear, would be three barrels, 28" VR with chokes, 18 1/2" with same chokes and last a 26", rifled and cantilevered with a suitable scope.
At least that was my choice. rem870barrels12ga.jpg (the middle one is actually 30")

I'm not nearly as schooled in the 870 or in gun smithing as some previous posters, just another point of view.
