A friend just got a Remington 870 police shotgun made in the late 1960s. The wood needs replacing.

What stock and forearm belong on this gun?

Would a new set for the current Remington Police Magnum be appropriate on it?

If there are any differences between the two, what are they?

Anything special to be aware of about this shotgun?

Depending on it's history I'd suspect that gun is as smooth as butter. :)

I never cared for the wood stocks on the 870P because they were too smooth and the short forend would sometimes pinch the skin on my little finger during rapid fire drills. I replaced the wood with a set of Hogue synthetics and could not be happier with them.

Robert,

The only real difference AFAIK would be that the 1960s Police and Riot guns (Police = 18" Cyl bore barrel w/bead sight, Riot = 20" w/same) stocks had only a buttplate (don't know when it changed over to a factory recoil pad though). The new stock will have a recoil pad.

The gun is blued not Parkerized, and my friend wants wood not synthetics. He already has at least one Parkerized Remington 870 with Speedfeed stock and Surefire forearm. Now he wants retro.

Thanks, Lee Lapin. I'll relay that information.

Then I suggest some of these. You might have to finish them yourself (or rather your friend does), I am not sure. At any rate it isn't hard and gives you something thats more yours than any storebought thing, just buy a birchwood casey stock finish set, you can opt out using the walnut stain, I did.

Contact Remington.

The nice lady in the parts department can set you up with the proper stock and forend combination for that Wingmaster Police.

You might be able to locate the part numbers from their website.
The only downside to this is that Remington charges the appropriate state sales tax and shipping fees.

I have a 1980 Wingmaster Police 870 that when I got it, it looked like it had never been fired!
Those 870s are nothing short of fantastic!

Hi Robert,

I put a set of Police stocks on one of my Wingmasters also. From all the stocks I've seen from Police trade-ins, the ones I've seen in store, my buddy's, and mine... they all look the same.

I see them pop up pretty regularly on the classifieds section at AR15.com.

Thanks for the many suggestions, folks. I appreciate them and will relay them.

The Shotgun section of this forum never fails to help.

I have several Police 870's and believe wood is the only way to go. The newer stocks have a mat walnut stock with short fore-end. The older Wingmasters have a beautiful high sheen walnut grain. You can find these up for auction on ebay all of the time. You may also get them from Numrich gun parts. Good luck restoring the old girl.
