I was at the range couple of days ago patterning a new Remington Spartan side by side and this guy was there. He says, "Is that a Spartan?" I says, "Yeah". "Where'd you get it?" "D and D (a gun shop)" He says, "I was in there yesterday and didn't have the cash, dangit!" Then he asks how much I paid and I said $299 to which is says "he didn't come off the price" to which I said Remington lists over 400 as a MSRP to which he says you can get 'em in San Antonio for $270. I'm thinkin' to myself, "So why are ya bitchin and not on the road to San Antonio?", but didn't say it.

Anyway, then he explains why he wanted it, says there have been lots of rumors that Remington was going to base a .45-70 double rifle off the action and that since they're slow coming out with it, he was going to cut the barrels off and fit .45-70 barrels to it.... Now, I don't know this guy. For all I know he's a master machinist, but I'm sorta glad I rescued this Spartan from the butcher, ROFLMAO!!!!

Anyway, has anyone heard this rumor of a Spartan based .45-70 double rifle from Remington? An affordable double rifle would be kinda fun, I'd think, and the .45-70 would be pretty fun as a South Texas hog getter. I really don't need no more stinkin' rifles, but I wonder if I could resist this one....:D It COULD even be offered as a matched set with shotgun barrels.

I don't know if Remington has got them over here yet, but IIRC when EAA was importing the Baikal guns they had .223, 30-06 and .45-70 rifles in both SXS and O/U configurations.

They're listed in the 2007 catalog, in 30-06 and 45-70. Don't recall if they list any other calibers. MSRP is around $700.00.

And pray tell, how much, exactly, is "a little more"? BTW, the Rem. double barrels are regulated with a jackscrew arrangement, so the shooter can regulate POI with different loads to suit his/her taste.

Stupid Question: If you're dumb enough, can both barrels on the Remington Spartan be fired at the same time if you pull both triggers? Or are they regulated to only one trigger at a time.

I know it makes no sense and is ill-advised, but I had a Norinco SxS back in the day that was capable and I am unsure if the Spartan can do the same?

Baikal makes the SxS double rifle in .45-70 and .30-06. It's just a matter of Remington deciding that they think they will sell, and thus importing them under the Spartan banner.

EAA used to sell .45-70 barrel inserts for the Baikal 12 gauge sxs shotguns.
