I have a friend that has a well-worn Remington Model 12 (I don't know the serial number) who shoots all different kinds of .22 LR cartridges in it. I mentioned that he might consider shooting only standard velocity/target/subsonic ammo in it because the breech bolt might not stand up to the pressures of high velocity ammo. I only suggested this because I have a Model 39 Marlin (serial number begins with "S", circa 1928 manufacture) that I only shoot Remington Subsonic ammo in it. Am I correct insofar as the Model 12 or am I being overly cautious? Thanks!

I am not an expert, but I've read that the model 12 should only be shot with standard velocity ammo. The 'improved' model 121 was designed for the new fangled hi velocity stuff.
I only shoot standard velocity in mine.

I happen to like the CCI standard because it goes bang 99.9% of the time with my Smith 41 shooting B/E. Some of my friends only shoot lead bullets in those 22's they love. I have a Win 61 which I have only shot CCI standard in but I buy the CCI by the case.
