I recently got an old Remington Model 24 in 22 short caliber. This is a semi-automatic rifle made between 1922 and 1935. The folks at Remington advised not shooting modern ammo in it. On the barrel it says "22 short smokless greased ammo". I asked Remington what velocity 22 short ammo was around 1935 and they said that information wasn't available. I found some CCI 22 Short Target at about 750 fps, and the gun functioned ok with it, but seemed to be in slow motion. Does anyone know if "Hi-Speed 22 short ammo would harm this gun? Has the velocity of 22 short ammo changed much over the years?

I have on thats a 22lr. dont think its had anything but HV tru in in the 30 years.

info on model 24.................

i hunted with a model 24 in the 60's, my brothers hunted regulary with it also after that time. it was made in both 22 short and 22 lr, however the early years were only 22 short. i believe they date back to 1924 and the long rifle around 1926.
they were used in shooting gallaries when i was a kid and the operator had a long metal tube they would use to quickly load the shells into the stock. ours was my fathers who loaned someone $5 in the forties and the fellow never came back.
i would venture a guess that more than 10,000 rounds went through that gun since we owned it. it was light, accurate, took abuse from teenagers and if you are interested in selling.....i would be interested in buying. one of my brothers ended up with it when my father died.
Interesting enough, the two Browning brothers were the designer of this gun and later went out on their own after Remington would not give them a fair payment.....the gun is still available today from Browning.

not enough of a difference to make a difference, i shoot both target and hi vels through my 70 year old guy. yeah, the slower stuff does kinda a slo mo thing with the bolt going back...

IIRC, shorts initially used 4 grains of blackpowder. Then they made some gallery loads that were guncotton and blackpowder. I have no idea what the specs are.

Remington Hi-Speed shorts in the '67 Shooters Bible are listed at 29 gr. @ 1125 fps. Remington Standard Velocity shorts are 29 gr. @ 1045.

If you want to try something a little slower, RWS makes a modern load with a 28 gr. bullet at 560 fps. www.22ammo.com/rws.html
