I have pretty well settled on 158 grain SWCHP +P as the carry and practice ammunition for my 640 and 642.

Searching the threads I seem to have found something of a consensus that the Remington R38S12 (which they call LHP) has a softer bullet and expands more reliably while the Winchester SWCHP X38SPD has a harder bullet and penetrates more reliably.

Are there real world data to support a practical difference?

If so, it would seem to make sense to use the Remington in the summer and the Winchester in the winter. I don't even want to think about one for indoors and one for outdoors.

I've heard the same thing. For most situations I'd prefer the Remington for overall better expansion. But where you'd need better penetration, go with the Winchester.
