I'm thinking about getting one of these for my new toy. What do current owners think of them? I've got a couple of the varmint models which are basically the same thing. Remmy's have been good to me. I'm buying another for a range toy. I wouldn't want the weight for hunting and I know they're not real practical for hunting most places. I just want a heavy barrel target gun that shoots the big stuff.

It's available in 25-06(special run) 264Win Mag.,7mm Rem Mag., 7mm Ultra Mag., 300 Win Mag., and 300 Ultra Mag.

I think I'm gonna get the 7mm Rem Mag for these reasons; I've loaded this round for years and am familiar with it. It doesn't use close to 100 grains of powder like it's big brother Ultra Mag. 7mm has good ballistic coefficient and there are a lot of good accurate bullets. It's always been my favorite caliber since I was a kid.

That said, I've never had a 25-06 and it would have less recoil. I'm thinking the .25 would have less target type bullets available. If the gun is a good shooter I might shoot some varmint class benchrest with it too.(300 yds) We shoot for score too so a larger bullet is beneficial. Which caliber would you go for?

Hey Horsemany, I take it you shoot at the Ike's range? I'm a member there but I haven't shot in the 300 yard matches yet. I hope to start this summer.

Yes I shoot at the Ikes. The new 300 yd range is rockin now. I hope to see you out there. First Saturday of every month is competition day. Everyone is really friendly there and I hope you join us some time. There's a hunter, varmint, and open class. So you could really shoot just about any rifle in one of the classes. I've been shooting casually at the practice shoots for a while and now I'm getting more into the matches.

I've been planning on trying out the hunter class, just as soon as I get my 30-06 back from my cousin who I lent it to.

I've shot black powder silhouettes there with my 45-70. That's a lot of fun. They have that once a month, but the date varies.

My neighbor bought Senderos in .25/06 and 7mm Rem. Mag. last Fall.

He has zapped a couple long-distance deer with the 7mm Rem. Mag. but so far he has mostly been shooting them at a target we set up at 460yds. He never tried shooting beyond about 150-200yds. until he bought those two rifles. Now he's hooked on the transcontinental bulletry. The .25/06 has a muzzle brake and it is way loud - has him flinching a bit right now. Both are plenty accurate and both have nice triggers. Really nice rifles !

Between the 25-06 and 7mmRem Mag does one have a slight accuracy edge over the other? The 25-06 is intriguing. Brass life will be greater, less recoil, less barrel heat, etc. One thing I noticed about the 25-06 is it doesn't have a very steep shoulder like the 7mm Rem Mag.

My neighbor hasn't yet shot his Senderos enough to make a fair assessment of which rifle is more accurate.
On paper - the 117gr. BTSP of the .25/06 and the 162gr. BTSP of the 7 mag. are too close to call - except the 7mag has more energy, of course, and will drift a couple inches less in the wind at say 300yds.
Both calibers are fun to shoot and I've seen muliple rifles in both calibers that commonly shot MOA or less.
A curious thing I (and several others) have noted about the .25/06 is that the bullet seems to arrive at its' destination now, as in NOW! It seems like the target or game shows the impact before the noise of the shot ends - even at distances out to perhaps 300-350yds. It's downright eerie.
I've had two .25/06s, one a Browning A-Bolt and the other a Ruger #1. Both would shoot 117gr. BTSP bullets into an inch at 100yds. all day long. Neither of them liked the 100-grainers very well at all. Both of them had Redfield 2x7 scopes on them.

Did you find the 25-06 easy to find a good load for? If it's one of those calibers that's not picky that would be a big plus.

I found loads (with 117gr. bullets) that did well in both my rifles straight from the reloading manuals almost right away.
I said above neither of my rifles liked the 100-grainers too much - and that's correct - but I forgot about the Speer 100-gr. HP which did pretty well in my #1 for the 100yd. group below.

I'd be okay with that group! Perhaps the 25-06 would have as much or more accuracy potential as the 7mmMag. It's good to know you didn't have to look long for a load that shot well.

I think the Potential Accuracy needle points at the .25/06 just because its' lesser bark and recoil make it more "shooter-friendly" - as in making it easier to shoot well.

The 7mag. IS fun to shoot but its' bellow and recoil DO mean the shooter has to work harder to keep from flinching/wincing etc.

I should have mentioned before that my two .25/06s both shot MOA or better with Hornady factory ammo, and my neighbor's .25/06 has shot right at MOA with Remington Core-Lokt and - when he gets more used to it - I think it will do better. A rifle that shoots well with factory fdder is a real nice thing to have.

Too bad they don't make one in a 260 Remington. But that would be thinking pretty far outside the box for today's Remington.

I have one in 7mm mag...I use it for wacking prarie dogs at 600-800 yards! Its a blast to shoot and it keep all the dog hunters wondering what im shooting!!!

Hi Peter...

My neighbor's is stainless fluted too - way cool-looking !

He put an inexpensive 4x12 on it as a temporary thing (he already had the scope) and is looking at the Leupolds for a permanent glass.

So the question is 25-06 or 7mm Rem Mag. I'd like to get one ordered but I'm stuck. I see benenfits of each. The problem is, none of the Sendero caliber offerings are really very practical. I'd use my other short action guns for prairie dogging and range shooting. I would hunt big game with other guns much lighter. This one would just be a novelty gun I'd shoot maybe 100 to 200 rounds a year through.

I've wanted a Sendero since they started making them in 94'. 7mm Rem Mag is my favorite caliber and I've loaded it for years. There are a lot of good bullets available.

The 25-06 wouldn't heat up as fast or have as much recoil. It doesn't have as many good bullets available. The brass should last a little longer. It may have a slight accuracy advantage(If that's true it would be the deciding factor for me).

The 25-06 could be a better dual purpose round - varmints and deer. By the way, where are you looking at buying it from? Just curious.

I've owned both .25-06 and 7mm Rem Mag. You will note a flatter trajectory at 500 yards with the 7mm Mag than the .25-06 due to BC. The 7 Mag will also delivery far superior drift and down range energy. The 120 grain projectile in a 7mm will knock a varmint into next month too. JMHO.

Edit to add:

As a matter of fact, the 7mm projectiles have just about the best ballistic coefficients that can be had.

I'll either buy from Scheels or a friend I know who deals guns at the shows and sells a lot of guns on Gunbroker. Were you out at Ikes today?

I think you're right. It was my first gut reaction ofwhat caliber I'd want once I decided I was getting a Sendero.

Actually... it sounds like you've just about talked yourself out of a Sendero.

No No. I'm just being honest with myself that it's more for playing and less about necessity. If I only bought the guns I needed I'd have been done buying 15 years ago. Now you're making me feel guilty(not really). It's actually the perfect mix I think.............Benchrest gun with plenty of boom-flop.
