Well, today i just picked up 3 boxes of 2 3/4 sluggers for my 20 gauge (already getting ready for deer season!!! :)) for $3.50 a box. I just realized now that 2 of the boxes are High Velocity, and one is just the regular. So, i had planned on using a box for target practice and then just keeping the other two for hunting/ just keeping around, but now i'm trying to decide if i need to practice with the high velocity if that is what im going to use while i'm actually hunting. The max range where i hunt would be about 60 yards or so, would i notice an accuracy difference between those two slugs at that range?

oh, i am just using iron sights

I've had better groupings with the 2-3/4" slugs. None of my shotguns did as well with the high velocity with regard to accuracy. Personally if you're used to shooting the standard rounds I would recommend sticking with them. It's not like you're getting that much more out of the high velocity rounds. The standard rounds kill just as effectively as the high velocity....dead is dead. :)

I understand what your saying but the HV and regular are both 2 3/4. So really i guess i'm wondering if im going to notice a difference in where they hit at 50 yards. I'm too cheap to go and buy more slugs if i dont have too. I have been checking out the histogram chart on the side of the boxes and they are about even a 50 yards so it'll be good enough for me. Thanks for the tip though about using 2 3/4 slugs.

You need to shoot them from the bench at the range, they are shooting the same projectile, but at 2 different velocities. If you really want to know which is better for your gun.

There are a lot of variables in slug shooting. And the more you eliminate them better shot you'll be. Every shotgun shoots slugs different.

Basically, you want to ask your self: "How pissed will I be if these low velocity slugs shoot way off, missing the monster buck, because I have been shooting these higher hitting slugs all day?"

If these are the same as the Remington HV slugs I have, they are not the same. The HV slugs are slightly less weight.

Haven't gotten to the range to mess with slugs yet, so can't comment on how the different velocities perform.

Remington often has trajectory data on the box, that might be a good place to start, but I agree there is no substitute for holes in paper.

If the slug weight is lighter in the HV then you may have an issue with them shooting higher even at 50 yards. I would suggest checking them out at the range also.

Remington Slugger 2, 3/4" 1oz slugs out of my 18.5" 870 group damned near on top of each other at 100yds. The 3" 1oz do the same. However, they both get 14 inches of drop.

So I thought if I went with the lighter 7/8oz slug and high velocity I could narrow my drop margin. I tried both the regular and magnum high velocity and they didn't shoot worth a damn! I was lucky to even hit the deer sized target at 100yds.

Now, Brenneke 1, 3/8oz 3" mag slugs were only 4-6" low and shot just as good as the sluggers. However, they kicked like a mule and Brenneke needs to stop switching their product every damned 3 years because now I can't find the same type of slug anymore. Maybe its called the Black Magic?

Remington Slugger 2, 3/4 1oz chronographed at 1545fps out of my 18.5" barrel. The 3" mag flew 1400fps. Yeah, go figure. I thought the magnum would be faster, but they are not for some reason. Regular sluggers are $2.83 a box and the 3" Sluggers are $4.50 a box locally. Its a no brainer I'm sticking with the regular punkin balls.

Brenneke's Black Magic in 3" Magnum carries the 1 3/8" 600-gr. Slug at a published 1,502 fps with a 4" - 6" overall trajectory for 100 yards.

Their lower recoiling Tactical Home Defense load (THL) with a 1-oz. 437-gr. slug is listed at 1,378 fps and provides outstanding accuracy, and when sighted in for 50 yards, is only 2" low at 100.

Another inexpensive option for self defense outside your home at distances under 50 yards is Federal's Flight Control slug at 1,145 fps and Remington's Low Recoil Slugger.

Brenneke's THD (Tactical Home Defense) load is just as accurate out of my 18 1/2" I/C barrel as Federal's Low Recoil Flite Control (FC) and has better barrier penetrating qualities.

For BG's or HD, FC has the edge due to lower recoil, better expansion, and 40% +/- lower price. I use Federal FC for tactical defense situations and Brenneke's Black Cloud for protection in the mountains.

My guns do best with the 2 3/4" Remington sluggers. I myself would get another box of them and use the others for target.
