I was just loading some Remington UMC into magazine for a trip to the range later today, and it turned my fingers black. I always though that this was from carbon or unburned powder after firing but this was with clean magazine. Is it power coating the outside of the bullets? Is it lube? What is it?

Are you sure it was the rounds? Did you clean your hands and then see if just the rounds caused it or take a swab or white towel and wipe the rounds to see if it turned them black?

If it was the rounds, only thing I can come up with is that somewhere from the time during manufacture to when it got to you, some powder or some other gunk got on the rounds.

Is this a new unopened box? Could it be dust or something from where the bullets were kept?

Definitely the rounds. I also get some brass on my hands, or a least a golden shine that looks like brass.

I've shot quite a bit of the UMC ammo and never had that problem before. I have no idea what it might be but maybe you have a bad batch or something. Did you shoot any of it? I would think about sending an email or making a phone call.

Remington UMC has gone to pot lately. It used to be just overruns and extras, and was still good ammo, but the stuff I've seen lately would be better classified as "rejects".
