I have read that you need to remove this plate and get "gunk" out.

I am a new owner of one and love the pistol and the way it shoots. My question is; is this really necessary?

If so, is it something I can do myself? I see two screws on the side; can I remove those myself?

Any assistance would be great.

Same as on other side plate revolvers: remove the grips, remove the screws, and rap lightly on the butt of the gun with a nylon mallet until the vibrations work the side plate loose. Do not attempt to pry it up with a screwdriver!

Is this necessary? Nah. Or at least not for a long time. Revolver mechanisms are some of the most intricate designs in firearms and can be very daunting to reassemble.

That's how I do it but I hold the gun loosely in my hand while rapping it. Also do not mix up the side plate screws. The forward screw is different and secures the cylinder crane.

Once you open it, hold on to all the parts. Really, you don't need to do it, and you'll chance some other issues unless you know how to put all the possiblities back together.

+1

Way more revolvers have been screwed up by amateurs taking the side-plate off, then have been screwed up by not taking the side-plate off.

Blow it out with an air hose or some gun-scrubber if you must, then oil & drip dry!

Mine was crusty and really needed a good thorough cleaning. I took the side-plate and cleaned it out with brake cleaner and re-lubed it. No drama. Be careful.

Spring for the AGI video if you aren't sure what you are doing,it can be very helpful. As a general rule, use a digital camera to photograph the steps of taking anything apart, you are sure to forget and important step otherwise. I had a buddy who was an amateur auto mechanic back in the day and he learned to use a Polaroid camera to avoid big problems.
