Remove sticky residue

I know this doesn't really pertain to guns, however you guys are very knowleagable in a lot of things, so here goes.


I have a riot helmet and it is too big. So until I get the proper size I have to add pads to the inside of the helmet to make it fit.


Well, the pads have one side that you peel off the tape and it's sticky, you take that, stick it to the helmet and it's supposed to work great. I did that and the pads did not stick, and when they came off they left a sticky residue.


I cannot get the sticky residue for the life of me. I tried lighter fluid to no avail. (Note: the interior of the helmet is some type of covered foam. That's where the sticky residue is.)


Does anyone know what I can use to get this sticky residue off?

if the helmet is metal, hold a lighter to it until the surface is hot and then rub at it with your thumb. that should get it off. all it takes is heat and elbow grease. i am sure that an abrasive pad will help when it is warm as well.

Ah, I will have to pick up some of the goo gone. I wonder if Cub Foods, Target or a local auto parts store will carry it?

I don't think this is going to work for you. From what I read, and I know of helmets, you are telling me the residue is not on a metal or HDPE surface, but some more porous, impact-abosorbing foam or LDPE. Goo-gone, Goof-off, Acetone, etc. will likely damage that, too.

What I would do is buy automotive spray-on adhesive and follow the directions. 3M has a product labeled, I think "777" and such. These are what automotive repair shops/hobbyists use to tack up foam headliners, etc. inside vehicles. Based on how I read your question and what you are working with, I think that is the way you want to go.

I use turpentine to remove the adhesive goo from labels.

Is Zippo fluid and lighter fluid the same thing?



I already tried lighter fluid.

Goo Gone does work wonders. I'm also a fan of acetone.

The name has apparently changed over the years, but I keep a bottle of Formby's Furniture Cleaner on hand for sticky residue. I tried Goo Gone, but prefer Formby's-it's not as thick, and I think it does a better job. I've used this stuff to clean up spilled candle wax, which can be pretty darn stubborn.

Got it at WalMart, but when I bought my first bottle it was called something else. I looked recently, and I didn't see any at WalMart, but they had something that looked the same (another name change?).

Anywho...next time you're in there, it's a rather dark green color-can't tell ya what they call it now!

Heck, I just cruised over to Formby's site, and I'm guessing they now call it Deep Cleaning Buildup Remover!
Looks just like what I had and currently have, but neither of mine were called that.

You can get goo gone in like 1 oz bottles in automotive section or sometimes at the checkout counter. Cubs, Target, wallyworld should have it

Apply ,let sit a half hour,wipe off with paper towel.

Works on virtually any surface.Without chemicals,fumes,poisons or any chance of melting the styro in your helmet.
