Hey Everyone,
I have a 12gauge o/u that the bluing on the action was in rough shape. So I polished it all off and the gun looks spectacular with just the silver metal showing. Unfortunately the gun gets surface rust almost immediately. I really don't want to re-blue the action because I love the current look (minus the rust).

Is there a way to clear coat the raw metal so that it doesn't rust?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks
Russ

This is the stuff the NRA museum uses.

maybe Nickle plate

Between 8 and 12 minutes in a Nickle plating tank, best if single plate Nickle, puts enough nickle on the action to be a durable finish. It will also reassemble, with out refitting any parts.

Some plating shops it may be best to see if you can hold the platers hand, deccoretive plating is usually 30+ minutes in the nickle, and even with good instructions platers are often are hard wired to this and put something in the tank planning to follow instuctions but forget as it not a mormal time frame for them!

post 64 Mod 94 Winchesters, this may be the best finish going! I see some decent parkerizing also. I hear of other things but from what I see the results are mixed at best.

Al,
I will look into the nickle plating, do you have an idea as to how much that would cost?
Thanks

If money is real tight-clear laquer spray or the afore mentioned wax type protectant,or ,car wax?I built a mauser rifle in 30-06 wi8th a 26" barrel and wanted to try it out for a while to figure the best length-accuracy-handiness compromise[I finally ended up at 23" of barrel with the heavy sporter profile barrel]] but anyway I used clear laquer on it for a year until i was finished cutting the barrel then I had it blued.
if money is not an object or should I say not a much of one than try nickel or brushed chrome plating.A lot of pistols are done with these, they vry similar in appearance ,the chrome is more durable. shootrj2003

That verys shop to shop

If you have stripped completely of all, finish, rust, dirt, oil, ETC......

It will still depend on the person behind the counter.

The shop I deal with the most for a straight to the plating tank job, is around $60 dollars for a 94 Win action.

If there is a shop near you. and If you can without the guy behind the counter getting a, this guy is a pest attitude,

Find out when the best time to show up for an in and out job,

Some shops have the guy on the plating line, work until the work that was polished that day is done, and showing up A little before the plater is scheduled is a window of dead time where the line has been checked any chemical balancing has been done. Showing up then with donuts, and cash, may just make everybodies day!

Some have the polishers work later so that first thing in the morning as soon as the line is ready the plater gets cracking!

Some shops take one look at a gunpart and say goodbye!

Al- Thanks for the info... i will look more into it.

Shootr- Money is tight, and the gun isn't a very expensive one, so I think I might try your Idea and see how it turns out! Thanks for all the info!
