Removing Manufacturer's Name

I would be curious about removing the "Remington" on a 700 action. I have seen it done in several circumstances.
 
dogmush, on the flip side of the slide are the caliber and model designation, which are nowhere else on the gun. I could cover the whole right side of the slide and a portion of the left side.
 
If I was going to do something like you plan, I would call the nearest ATF offfice and ask the question. The fact that you intend to engrave the information may make it perfectly legal. You might simply engrave over the etched script so that technically you didn't remove anything.
Even if you put it back on, technically you DID remove something.

Who's to say what you put back on is what was there before.
 
Just don't alter/deface/obliterate the serial number on the frame/receiver. Everything else is fair game.

Be advised that you may be forced to have this same argument occurring in this thread with someone, if you end up trying to sell it.
