Repairing front sight on older Ruger 44mag

My son-in-law was recently given his grandfathers old(50+ years,he thinks)Ruger 44Magnum Single Action. His grandfather had filed down the front sight because he had trouble with it snagging on his holster(?). We've talked to a gunsmith that told us about the only fix may be to solder a piece on top of the sight but that it more than likely would not hold long. Can anyone suggest a better way? He took one of the fiber optic tubes from my HiVis kit and was going to try to somehow attach it to the sight,but I have my doubts about that holding,either. He would like to keep it as close to original as possible because this gun is the closest to his heart of all his guns,but adjusting the rear sight to compensate just aint working for him. Any suggestions?

Gary Reeder does a replacement sight that you can than replace the blades to your choice

OR

Get some JB Weld and add some to the blade and then file down to where you need it

Any suggestions?

Return it to Ruger Customer Service and they will replace the front sight for a very reasonable fee. I would be temped to have them go through it and refurbish as it will come back looking like a new revolver. Ruger does this cheaper than any other firearms maker. Great deal for their customers!

To keep it close to original as possible I would send it to Alan Harton in Houston and allow his TIG welding magic to make it right.

If you return it to Ruger, they will perform the transfer bar conversion whether you want it done or not. If you do send it to them, insist on the return of the original lockwork. But first, I would ask my question here

Don't send it to Ruger. Their lawyers insist they ruin every 3-screw single action returned to them. I've read lately they are refusing to return the original parts.

Their website still says that they will return the original parts. Video is under "Miscellaneous" at the bottom of the page, "Old Model Safety Conversion". If you are still concerned about the return of your parts, just remove them before sending the gun.

If you have an old 3 screw Blackhawk with adjustable sights, look at the block the blade sets on. That block is setting on the barrel with two pins protruding down into the barrel. I am almost certain it is silver soldered. I am looking at my 3 screw Blackhawk in 44 mag. My 3 screw 357 Blackhawks have the same arrangement although the block and blade is smaller. I do know they are attached in the way described.
