Dear Mr. 280,

Thank you for contacting me regarding S. 388, a bill to
codify a national standard for carrying a concealed firearm. I
appreciate hearing from you on this matter.

I understand your concerns regarding gun control
legislation. Throughout my career in the Senate, I have chosen
to support gun safety legislation that balances the need to keep
our communities safe with the legitimate interests of law-abiding
gun owners. I recognize that responsible gun ownership has long
been part of America's heritage. At the same time, I believe
that it is the obligation of government to pursue responsible
policies that protect innocent Americans–particularly
children–from gun violence. While we have made significant gains
in curbing gun violence, far too many people are still killed or
seriously injured by guns each year. Data from the National
Center for Injury Prevention and Control show that in 2003, there
were 30,136 deaths resulting from gun-related incidents,
including 4,558 deaths of persons who were under the age of 21
and 198 deaths of children under 12 years of age.

As you know, Senator John Thune (R-SD) introduced S. 388 on
January 25, 2007. This bill would authorize nonresidents of a
state to carry concealed firearms in that state if they possess a
valid permit to carry concealed firearms in any state. This bill
has been referred to the Senate Judiciary Committee, of which I
am not a member. Please be assured that I will keep your views
in mind should this legislation be considered by the full Senate.

Thank you again for contacting me. If you would like to
stay in touch with me on this and other issues of importance,

not hesitate to contact me again if I
can help you in any way.

Sincerely,

CHRISTOPHER J. DODD
United States Senator

Translation:

I'm basically a gun grabber, hiding behind the children and safety issues, spinning that as the responsible thing to do.

Because I have not otherwise commited to a position, you may infer that I will not be supporting anything like what you suggest.

You can rest assured that I will be thinking of you the next time I vote on this issue.

BOHICA,
Chris Dodd

Antis long claimed that guns should be regulated like cars.

OK, car licenses granted by one state are recognized by other states.
I'll bet the antis will fight tooth and nail to avoid treating guns like cars.

It is kinda like apples and oranges, but it demonstrates to me that to
antis "reasonable regulation" is prohibition motivated out of fear and
loathing.

I KNEW you guys would see right through that one. I thought the "it's for the children" angle was particularly craw sticking.

:p

Yeah. I live in CT also. I also sent Dodd an e-mail about this issue, and got the same stock response. And he calls himself a Republican. ugh.:barf:

This bill only concerns law abiding citizens who legally carry a pistol. What I want to know, from the National Center for Injury Prevention and Control's data, is how many people are unlawfully murdered by legal permit holders using their carry sidearm?

My guess is that the number is statistally insignificant. It's like asking about a driver's license reciprocity issue and being told that 40,000 people die in car accidents every year. THAT DATA IS IRRELEVANT!!

What bothers me most is that he apparently things that he's fooling anybody with this kind of evasive response. That shows what he really things of his subjects -- opps, I mean constituents -- that they are morons too stupid to see through this.

I don't think he thinks he is fooling anyone, or he is dumber than I think. I think he is just reciting the mantra for the benefit of those who do vote for him and keep him in office.

He is also no Republican. He is a runner-up to Danny Glover in the race to adore Hugo Chavez and Castro, but the difference is not so visible. Like Bloomberg, a RINO. I think he should be expelled, meself. A sniveling Quisling, or worse.

That is exactly what I call a "non-answer".

Translated, it means; "You won't like how I plan to vote, so I won't tell you. Since you wrote to me concerning YOUR right to keep and bear arms, I CAN'T tell you the truth."

As a Republican, I'll fully admit that we have some real jokers in our party.
However, Chris Dodd is not one of them. He's a Democrat through and through, as was his dad Thomas Dodd who wrote the 68 gun ban.

Dodd's also running for president.

Can't believe nobody called him on this one.

How many were committed by criminals? Hint: essentially all

How many were committed by law abiding citizens? Hint : approximately none

So his point is...what again?

I grew up in CT. His father was a Congressman back then. And an idiot. The apple doesn't fall far from the tree...

If these numbers were correct, 10 or so THR members could probably overtake the country in a year...hmm ;)

HUH?

Chris Dudd is (or was) chair of the Democratic National Committee, and he claims to be a candidate for the Democratic presidential nomination.

Republican?

Hmmm, now that I'm thinking about it, my letter to him mentioned something about never, ever voting for him for ANY office. I'm surprised he responded at all, figuring he would have just written me off as a potential vote and concentrated his efforts elsewhere. No, he's not dumb enough to think I buy that drivel. He's just an arrogant SOB that does what he wants and doesn't really care otherwise. I watched him lie his ass off on the senate floor during argument over the gun manufacturer liability issue. I wrote him back then, pointing out where he was misrepresenting facts. I got a form reply back then too. Though I'll say this recent one seems a bit softer than the last one. Lieberman is acting like he's softening too. But you have to keep an eye on him because of his apparent affliction with snake in the grass syndrome. :p

Geez. Can't we cool it with the insulting?
I respect Chris Dodd but I would not vote for him.
Also, I think Senator Lieberman has gone off his rocker. And to think he was almost Vice President.

Yes, his father, Tom Dodd, was the author of the bill which became the Gun Control Act of 1968. It was referred to as the "Dodd Bill."

This is the law that created the federal firearms license. Prior to that, any hardware store, filling station, or mail-order company (Sears) could sell guns. No record keeping.

I well remember writing about and debating the Dodd Bill. I was pretty young then, but the debate was furious. The interesting thing? Forty years later, the anti-gunners say the exact same thing today that they did then.

Aguila-Never mind. I was thinking of Chris Shays. It was a hectic day, and I got my Chris's messed up. Mea Culpa. In the Northeast, does it really matter which party he belongs to anyway? As someone put it in another post, "same Sh*t, different pile."

They always quote the 30,000 number the reality if they took the time to look it up is about half of those are suicides.

Well, if they treated cars like Guns, then they'd want to ban cars. Oh wait, the Federal government gets 18 cents per gallon tax revenue on every gallon of motor fuel sold!! Then the states get even a more significant share. And yet, automobiles will continue to cause more deaths than guns, drunk drivers or not. Of course, we COULD venture into how many deaths that Doctors cause through negligence, malpractice or other ignorant doings.

Even more, why is it neglected to be reported how many defensive gun uses have happened that have actually prevented death and/ or crime??
