I thought this might be a good place to start on my search; I got this idea on another forum, and it really struck me as a great idea. I'm a hunter education instructor in Indiana, and am looking for various dummy rounds to use in the ammunition section of the class. These would obviously need to be empty cases (no primer or powder) with a bullet seated. I'm looking for a couple of each of various calibers to show the wide range available, as well as the similarities of some calibers to others.

The following calibers, legal in Indiana for hunting (I would prefer NON FMJ bullets in these to keep them as legal examples):
.357 Magnum
.41 Magnum
.44 Magnum
.44 Special
.44-40 Winchester
.45 Colt
.45 Long Colt
.45 Winchester Magnum
.454 Casull
.458 SOCOM
.480 Ruger
.475 Linebaugh
.50 Action Express
.500 S&W

The following examples could contain any type of bullet, as the caliber itself is not legal for hunting in Indiana:
.35 Remington
.357 Herrett
38 Special
38 Smith and Wesson
38 Colt New Police
38/200
38 Long Colt
38 Super
38 ACP
38 Colt Auto
45 ACP
45 Automatic
25/20
32/20
30 carbine
.30-30 Winchester
.444 Marlin
.45-70 Govt.

Would also appreciate ANY caliber you can offer, even if it's not on the above list. I'd also like to find some shotgun sabot/slug shells (10,12,16,20, and .410) for the same purpose, but not sure of the possibilities of making them look unfired while at the same time being empty.

So, is anyone willing to help out? If you are able to, shoot me a PM or reply here.

i'd be willing to help you out, but... (there's always a 'but', right?)

we just moved, and my press isn't set up. deer season opens this weekend, so it will be at least 1.5 weeks before i can do anything. maybe somebody else can be more prompt, but if not, i can cover about 7 of your listed requests... and maybe a couple not on your list.

i'm assuming you only want handgun examples?

dakotasin, thanks for the offer to help! Actually, I have plenty of time to round these up, classes are finished for the year and I won't have the next one until March or April.

I'm looking for handgun and/or rifle examples, whatever I can get my hands on to pass around the class and show as examples.

Good luck with deer season, and just let me know when/if you get time to help!

Greg,

I can make up some dummies for you in 30 M1 Carbine, 30-06 and 41 Mag.

How about 2 each?

Let me know,

Tim

closetgunnut, that'd be great; I'd actually like to have 2 of each caliber for the classes...I'll shoot you a PM.

Someone on one of the other forums brought up a concern about shipping these across state lines. Does anyone know if that's a problem since they will have no primer or powder?

Also, I did mis-copy and paste some of the info in the original list regarding legal or illegal. I'm still wanting to acquire as many of those calibers as possible since they are directly mentioned in our publications, but for for anyone curious, here is a correct copy and paste from the Indiana firearms regulations for deer:

Shotguns must be 10, 12, 16, or 20-gauge or .410 bore loaded with slugs or saboted bullets.

Handguns, other than muzzleloading, must have a barrel at least 4 inches long and must fire a bullet of .243-inch diameter or larger. The handgun cartridge case, without the bullet, must be at least 1.16 inches long.

Full metal-jacketed bullets are not permitted.
Some types of handgun cartridges legal for deer hunting include:
.357 Magnum
.41 Magnum
.44 Magnum
.44 Special
.45 Colt
.45 Long Colt
.45 Winchester Magnum
.35 Remington
.357 Herrett.

Some illegal handgun cartridges for deer hunting are 38 Special, 38 Smith and Wesson, 38 Colt New Police, 38/200, 38 Long Colt, 38 Super, 38 ACP, 38 Colt Auto, 45 ACP, 45 Automatic and 45 Auto Rim. All 25/20, 32/20 and 30 carbine ammunition is prohibited also.

Rifles must fire a cartridge with a bullet of .357-inch diameter or larger; have a minimum case length of 1.16 inches; and have a maximum case length of 1.625 inches. These rifle cartridges can be used only during the deer firearms season.
Some cartridges that are legal include the following:
.357 Magnum
.38-40 Winchester
.41 Magnum
.41 Special
.44 Magnum
.44 Special
.44-40 Winchester
.45 Colt
.454 Casull
.458 SOCOM
.480 Ruger
.475 Linebaugh
.50 Action Express
.500 S&W

Some illegal rifle cartridges for deer hunting are the .30-30 Winchester, .444 Marlin and .45-70 Govt.

I couldn't imagine a problem as it it inert. I made up some 5.7 dummies recently for movie props and have 2 that I could send you. I can also do 38, 357, 9mm, 45acp, 308, and 223. Maybe also 30-30(can't believe it is illegal to hunt with:cuss::banghead:). Maybe also 7.62x39. Do you want hunting bullets, FMJ, or Accelerators in the rifle? How about the pistol? FMJ, cast, or defensive HP's? Let me know and I'll make them up and send them out.

bullseye, thanks for your generous offer. I'll send you a PM with my address.

From the list above, I'd like to have hunting bullets in the legal cartridges, and the non legal ones don't matter on the bullet type. Same thing for the handgun cartridges.

Thanks again!

i reload, and when i do i make my own dummy round, brass and bulet only no primers, and when i train at the range, i put one in every mag to get type one malfunctions.

i would be glad to send you some .40s&w dummy rounds, but i see that they aren't on your list and that is the only thing that i am reloading right now.

let me know your address and how many you need and i will send them out. btw i shoot lead so most of my dummy rounds are lead is that ok? if not i do have a few that are fmj dummies.

Thank you all for your donations; these will be beneficial to the hunter ed classes, as well as our Scout Troop that's preparing to start a Venture Crew later this year! Here is a list to show what everyone has agreed to send. Keep in mind, I'm NOT a caliber expert and there are a couple that I believe may be the same.

If you have anything to offer that's not on the list, please let me know!

If they just have to show the different sizes, AZOOM makes practice rounds, (most folks call them snap caps), in a wide range of calibers and gauges

oneounceload; I actually thought of that, and started researching it and quicky realized the expense that would be incurred. As a volunteer instructor, we don't get financial reimbursement for teaching. I would think they could possibly be written off on taxes, however, there would still be pretty good expense to stock up on the assortment of calibers desired. Because of that, and after seeing another instructor do this on a different forum, it struck me that this would be the most feasible idea.

I have actually received a few donations, as you can see from the list above. I'd like to thank all of those that are helping out with this, and will hopefully be able to come up with a pretty viable teaching assortment!

Might I suggest a running list and when you get a caliber donated you revise the list in a new post so anyone willing to donate can easily find a caliber you need.

Good luck getting what you need. I would help but the only calibers I reload have already been covered.

I can cover you on the 500 S&W. I've got some cases that I crumpled a while back by over crimping. Althought they resized back straight, I don't trust them under pressure so they'd make good display rounds.

I've also got 22-250, 300 Win Mag, 300 H&H Mag, 338/378 Weatherby Mag at my disposal (worn out brass that I can no longer reload).

I should be sitting down at the loading bench in a day or two. Let me see if I can't make it a priority. If I don't do it straight away, I probably never will. :(

Im a cartridge collector too, and I have had many folks give me some for my collection. So I'm willing to help too. Since Strongbad offered you a .300 Win Mag, I'll let him handle that, but I can send you a .338 Win Mag and a .325 WSM.

Tang419, I'm not collecting them as a hobby, but am wanting the dummy rounds for use in hunter ed classes and our venture crew. I'd be glad to accept whatever you might offer, and will send you a PM.

Thanks to everyone that has sent the dummy rounds so far; I'll be posting an updated list soon so that those of you who have sent packages know that they've been received!

Also, I'm still looking for anything that any of you reloaders may be able to help out with! :)

Is the list above your legal list of calibers allowed for deer hunting in Indiana? I'm curious. It looks like my state's "Ohio" law. "Handgunwith 5" minimum length barrel, using straight-walled cartridges .357 caliber or larger".

BTW: I haven't forgotten your 9mm WinMags. I have been working nights and weekends and simply haven't had time. I will try to get the together this weekend.
