Hello... I am in the midst of putting several guns back into original working condition.

I am currently trying to peice together the original (missing) Reminton peep sights on my 341-P. I have found a few individual pieces online and am interested in seeing detailed photos so that I can make sure I am purchasing the right parts and so I can put them together once obtained.

It appears that the 341-P, 41-P, and 510-P MAY have used similar sights. So these would be the pics I am interested in.

I know this requires more work than a traditonal request for textual answers, so anyone who is willing to respond has my thanks.

Jeremy,

You are right about the Remington 'peep' sights. The 'P' versions-(ie-34P, 341P,41P, 510P, 511P, 512P, 514P) had roughly the same sight. They wear not all exactly the same though, I recently picked one up to replace the bent one on my 41P and the two mounting holes are just a fuzz too far apart. :banghead:

Here are acouple pics of the bent one I was trying to replace....

Thanks Loner, those will be very helpful in piecing together what I need.

I am beginning to wonder if those peep sights are not very accurate or durable. I have been searching for days, and almost every 341-p that I find online has had the peep removed and replaced with open sights. Very curious.

Just like this one:

My luck in finding pictures has suddenly increased. i think between this one and Loner's I (and anyone else interested) can get a good idea of what parts are needed.

I called several parts stores around the country, and all said that these sights are hard to come by... I bet there are thousands lying around in workbench drawers where the owners threw them after installing scopes or open sights.

Jeremy,

If every one of my old Remingtons had a factory peep sight on it I would be in hog heaven. The Remington peeps have two apratures, the second one is the elevation lock screw. I mostly shoot paper with mine so the peep and the hooded post front sight are perfect. If I was using them for hunting, I guess I could see where some one would prefer the open sights, or possibly a scope. The original 'P' versions did not even have a dovetail to place an open sight in, so some one either cut the dovetail or drilled and tapped for that sight.

I don't have a 341, yet, but I do have two M34A's that have the open sights. The last one I picked up as a barreled action with bolt for less than $50. The bonus was that some one had a Lyman 55R peep sight installed, which is the correct set-up for an NRA version, just doesn't have NRA stampped on the barrel.

It sure wouldn't hurt my feelings if all those people that have all of thos factory peep sights lying around in workshop drawers were to dig them out and let some of us that are willing to use them, put them back on these old rifles where they belong.

No original dovetail? Wow I didn't realize that, someone sure went through a lot of trouble to install these open sights then, because i am sure this is the origianl barrel, since it still has tapped holes for the hooded sights.

Questions:

1) So the elevation adjustment is loosened/tightened by whichever aperture you are not sighting through? that is an intersting design.

2) Does the front screw need to be loosened to adjust elevation?

Jeremy,

No, the screw has a shoulder on it that allows the sight to move up and down when the rears is loosened.

I tried to find the size of the two different apratures in my "Remington-.22 rimfire rifles" book by John Gyde and Roy Marcot, sizes are not listed, even in the brochures that came with the rifles when they were new. The book is definitely worth the price if you are into old walnut and steel 22 rifles.

I tried to enlarge the picture of your rifles rear sight and all it did was make it fuzzy, but it looks like your sight is similar to this one. If it is it is definitely not original, these are old Mossberg sights.

Results!

I ordered every part i could find from Numrich, and they came today. All fit together perfectly no matter what rifle they were listed under online.

Rear Sight Windage Plate: 41P, 341P
Rear Peep Sight Disc (small hole) x2: Remington 41P
Rear Sight Base: Remington 341P, 41P
Rear Sight Base Screw: 41P, 341P, 510P, 511P, 512P
Rear Sight Elevating Indicator: 341P, 41P
Front Sight Housing: 341P, 41P
Rear Peep Sight Nut: 511, 510, 512, 41, 41P (these seem off)
*** (This is the parts cross reference according to Numrich... it may not be completely accurate)

Gonna do some casual shooting soon to determine accuracy, but I am thrilled no matter what. The only parts I could not get were the screws for the front sight housing (should be simple to find some though), the inserts for the front sight, the elevation plate with markings, the tiny screws for elevation and windage plates, and the large hole aperture.

But, none of these missing parts will hurt me for the time being since the front bead sight already installed seems to be the appropriate height. And since the unused aperture onthese rifles is used to lock elevation, I simply ordered an extra small hole aperture to use until I find the large hole.

So, anyways, if anyone out there has an unused large hole aperture for these rifles, I will trade a small hole aperture. :)

Gunny41,

Joe only makes replacement apratures and the backer nut for the 'P' series rifles. As far as I know, no one is making the complete replacement sight, especially not for $10. Originals have gone for as much as $100 on ebay....

Sorry to pull up an old thread but did you ever find the front sight inserts? I've recently picked up a 341-p and that's the only thing that is missing on my rifle. I understand that originally it may have had 4.

If no one has an idea of where to get them I'd be interested in anyone would be willing to to get a detailed drawing of the front sight inserts that they have. Maybe I could find someone to copy them. I'm sure it'd be pretty easy to do in a machine shop.

Hello, and welcome,

No, I have never found the front sight inserts. And as much as I would like to have original equipment, I am ready to admit that this was a bad design by Remington (front AND back sights). I say this because the front sight inserts are fragile and easy to lose, plus the back sights are not useful for long use in the field. (I think these reasons may be why these sights are hard to find now).

I personally have the complete sight set, aside for the front inserts, and am not satisfied. To remove the bolt for cleaning or repair, you have to loosen the elevation nut of the rear sight, so that the entire rear sight can be raised enough to remove the bolt. Thus, you lose your zero and it will take several shots (at the very least) to zero back in.

So basically, in my opinion, if you want the complete set of sights for historic reasons, I applaud you. But if you want to use the rifle, keep or install aftermarket blade, peep, or scope sights.

Hello all,

I came across this thread in my own search to restore an early model 511-P that was my Grandfather's. I have found everything but the rear peep sight assembly (it was removed for a scope at one point). I've tried all the suggested sites such as gun-parts.com, e-gunparts.com, etc. I was hoping someone would have a line on one of these babies. Thanks.

You can get all the parts from Numrich (e-gunparts.com) at the present time except for the elevation plate and the plate screws if you look under the 41-P & 341-P parts. The Remington peep sight is nearly identical for the 41-p, 341-p, 51x-p. The only difference seems to be the spacing of the mounting screws on the base; the 51x series screw holes are slightly closer together. If you get a 341-P base, you can simply file the rear slot a tad wider on the inner side so it moves up and down freely on a 51x-P. Might not be 100% correct for a collector, but works fine for a shooter.

I hate to post to such an old thread, but this thread has a lot of great detail for 41-P owners like myself looking for aperture parts, and it raises some questions I've always had about my rifle.

My 41-P was passed down from my grandfather from when he was a boy. Unfortunately, the only insert in my front sight was broken at some point before I owned it, and several screws are missing from the gun. Someone requested a picture of what the original front site inserts looks like for the stock peep site. I second that. Does anyone have it? Because I may be able to get a similar insert custom made.

I agree with others that this was not a very robust design, but I'd love to have the original parts. e-gunparts.com has everything that I need out of stock, so these must be the parts everyone loses or breaks! As far as I can tell, here's what I'm missing (e-gunparts.com part numbers):

Bolt Plug Lock Screw- 444960 (darn thing isn't there anymore so the bolt plug spins around then sometimes runs into the rear sight when firing, so the rear sight is getting marred up. I've been rummaging through set screws trying to find a match to prevent this from happening.)

Rear Sight Plate Screw for Elevation and Windage- 444320 (one of those two screws is missing)

Front Sight- 443090
OR (because I have the hood already)
Front Sight Reticule - 0.05" Blade- 443170
Front Sight Reticule - 0.07" Aperture- 443110
Front Sight Reticule - 0.11" Aperture- 443130

Anyone know what the different sight reticules are? Don't know what the difference between the blade and the aperture is.
