hello all,

Just a curious question about Black bears. My wife came home from work the other day and said asked if we have black bears here in Winston Salem/Greensboro area. Of course I told her no that they are all on the coast or in the mountains. She swore that this animal that she saw walking on the side of the road was too big to be a dog. Anyone else hear of bear in this part of NC?

According to the NC wildlife website, there are not....but who knows? Has anyone here ever seen them in my area...I guess thats the better question.

A few years back, my brother in-law...a Lt. with the WSPD, while answering a "prowler" call at 0300...came face-to-face with a young black bear smack in the middle of the W-S city on Peacehaven Road. Said he didn't know who it scared more...him or the bear.

About a year before moving here from the King/Rural Hall area, reports of a Black bear were confirmed...by yours truly. Caught a glimpse of him on the railroad tracks on Tuttle Road. He skedaddled like his fanny was aflame a half-second after he realized that I'd spotted him.

Bears move around more then most people think for several different reasons and some times if they like a place that has plenty of food they stay a while.

Yes, a guy in our hunting club got a sow and cubs on a game cam a couple years ago in the Walnut Cove area which is just north of Greensboro and Winston -Salem.

About 5 years ago, my neighbor hit one on US70 in between New Bern & Kinston. Not far from your area. Here in Raleigh, we had one running around in the middle of suburbia just north of the airport around the Brier Creek area. They're nothing to worry about.
