I'm about to start reloading for my Bushmaster AR. I'm planning on using it for NRA High Power competition. My question is, which is better, full length case resizing or just head and neck resizing?

Thanks

You need full length sizing in an auto if you are going to reuse the brass to any degree or use warm loads. You may get away with neck sizing in a 5.56 chamber, but a fail to feed will crush you in a match.

Semi-autos required full length resizing. Anything else and you will have feeding problems.
The head never gets resized. That's the end the primer goes into. Neck sizing is fine for a bolt action that you use same brass in exclusively.

When I first got an AR, I thought I could get by with neck sizing, like I had done in my bolt actions for many years. I thought wrong. I full length size, but I don't seem to need the special "small base dies" that some apparently do.

AFhack, Congrats on the High Power.

For sizing, I'm afraid it's going to be full length. I use a match Hornaday bushing die with a Forster match seating die. Use plenty of case lube as well.

Be sure to uniform the primer pockets.

For 69 gr. SMK's I use 24.0 to 24.8 grs. of R-15 in a Lake City case with a Rem 7 1/2 primer to get things started. OAL is 2.25"

For across the course I use 77 and 80 Gr. SMK's I use 23.5 TO 24.4 grs. of R-15 in a Lake City case with a Rem 7 1/2 primer to get things started. The 77's are loaded mag length and the 80's are .015 off the lands.

These loads are safe in my rifle, 6 1/2 to 1 Nor Pac Wylde chamber barrel, and I have gotten at least 10 reloads out of brass using this data.

R-15 also burns clean if that means anything to you. Normally, I don't give a rip about how clean a powder is if it shoots well. It's sorta nice not to have to clean real hard for once.

Thank you all for the info and the reciepes :)

Full length resizing it is then
