Fellow AR-15 types,

I am somewhat new to the AR-15 thing, been doing target shooting w/ handguns and bolt guns for 15 years.....but the black rifle is lots of fun!!:D

PICTURES:
Just wanted to report on a recently purchased and tested, out-of-the-box RRA AR-15 rifle. Seen here!!.

AR-15s shown in the picture:
Far right: 16" RRA Tac with a ATN red dot job.
Middle is a "pre-forward assist" SP1 with a Leupold VX-III 2.5x8x40.
On the left is the 20" RRA Varmint rifle, fitted with a Leupold VX-III 8.5x25x40 scope inside Leupold Mark IV mounts, also sporting a Versapod.

ACCURACY:
Anyway, back to the accuracy test. I shot the varmint rifle today from 250 yards at some property I own (seen here) and the groups are as follows:

Factory Federal Premium 80gr HPBT Match: 10 shots into 1.2 inches (wow!!)
75gr Hornady AMAX, 25.5gr W748, Rem 7-1/2BR primers, R-P Cases: 10 shots 1.75 inches

53gr Seirra HP Match, 25.5gr H335, Rem 7-1/2BR primers, R-P Case: 10 shots 2.0 inches.

By my standards, this is a decent factory rifle out of the box. I had calm sunny conditions, a great rifle rest, and tried to be consistant for all shots.

One thing going for the RRA rifles is the great triggers. Really nice.

Just wanted to pass this along for folks considering purchasing an AR-15, you cant go wrong with the quality and price of a RRA. The varmint rifle cost me about $850. Of course the scope, mounts, versapod added alot more......lots of fun!!

Now I just have to work harder on my reloads to beat the factory.....I can believe how good that stuff was......

Man-- that's icredible accuracy for 10 shots-- wow! I have an ISSI .223 AI AR with 9 twist 26" Hart barrel that i've used on coyotes and pr. dogs, and it's just great with the 69's/68. I have the 4.5-14X FFII Ball. Plex reticle, and it's killed a couple coyotes with 1st shot connections out to 400+ yds. A buddy of mine is taking them to places i never thought they'd go. He likes the big Leupolds too. Check out some of his 500 yd. gps. here-- www.insightshootingsystemsinc.com

Tell ya' what i'd like to get is 1 of those D-Tech uppers in 243 WSSM. With the 87 V-Max on top it oughtta do some things to coyotes way out yonder.

First of all, WOW you have a whole lot of guns. Secondly, why in the hell are you resting your guns on their barrels??? Also why do you have your carbine on the right wresting its barrel on the cement??? I cringed in pain when I clicked on the link and saw that picture!

Metapotent,

Good day to you.....yea, I understand your concern. I am familiar with how target accuracy is destroyed by just a small nick in the crown.

About the barrels pointing down.....

In the safe they are on a soft plastic mat. I keep them that way to keep the oil out of the action. I sometimes go 6-12 months before I get a rifle out in the back. When I put them in the safe I do it gently. You can see all the oil that has leaked out over time. I just dont feel comfortable with the muzzles pointing up. Maybe I should invest in some chamber plugs.

As for the 16" AR, at the end of the barrel is a muzzle brake. Yes it is on concrete, but only because it has a muzzle brake. I would never think of doing that otherwise.

You know, I might try a little experiment. I have 20 long guns in a "13 Long Gun" safe.....maybe they would fit a little better with the muzzles pointing up vs down, but for more than 10 years I have only stored them muzzle down....

Hmmm.....

I store all my wood stocked guns that way.

I don't like oil on my wood stocks when I go out to sea for 8-10 months at a time. All my wood-stocked long guns are on closed-cell foam, muzzle down.

Now, about the RRAs. I have an RRA upper on the way, and I'm really excited now! That's some really great shooting!

Best,
Steve

1) Great shooting.
2) RRA AR15s are all that I own now.
3) I also love their 2 stage triggers.
4) The 53 gr ammo looks to be your worst group. That is probably the low end bullet weight for your Varmint's 1 in 8 twist. Might I suggest that you give Black Hills ammo a try. They have some nice offerings in 60gr-77gr that your rifle might like. I don't even reload for .223 since I have shot sub 1/4" groups at 100 yards (0.154" being the best) with the Black Hills ammo. It's not worth my time to try and beat that. FYI....the Black Hills blue box (remanufactured from once fired brass) shoots identical to the red box (new).
4) I am jealous of you revolver collection. :what:
