I will be retiring from the Army in a couple of weeks and will be moving to Hobbs, NM. I have a job there for me. Is there anybody here from around that area? What are gun laws there? Any ranges or shooting teams or the likes of them there or in that area? Is it Veteran/Military Friendly?

Any responses would be appreciated and I thank you in advance!!!!

I live in Hobbs. I am a retired LEO. We have the Hobbs Gun Club which is located at the old Hobbs Army Airfield and the cost to join is $35.00 a year. We have a covered rifle range and several pistol ranges. There is a club which is a member of the USPSA. They hold matches on the first Saturday of the month during the season. There are a lot of shooters here and as in the rest of the state open carry is allowed. Hope this helps.:)

How do I link up with you guys? What do you guys shoot with for you competitions? $35 ain't bad for a year, when is your season?

I'll be moving in on the 16th of April.

short synopsis on firearm laws in the State of NM:

you can carry concealed unloaded or concealed with a CCL. States recognized by NM:(from http://dps.state.nm.us/lawEnforcement/ccw/index.php

Alaska Kentucky North Carolina Tennessee
Arizona Michigan North Dakota Texas
Colorado Minnesota Ohio Utah
Delaware Missouri Oklahoma Virginia
Florida Montana South Carolina Wyoming

You can open carry loaded.

Must be 19 to possess a handgun.

Vehicles are an extension of your domicile. You can carry concealed in them, however once you step out you must comply with the above.

any other questions?

Sorry to intrude here, but you said "carry concealed unloaded" ? Did I read that correctly. So you can carry concealed without a permit as long as it's unloaded? That about pointless. I can hear that conversation with an LEO for that one "are you carrying a weapon?" yes officer. "do you have a permit to carry?" no, but it's ok, the gun is unloaded. Yeh, that will go over real well :)

Remember it's all the silly people up in Santa Fe that write this stuff. Don't get me started on the stupid **** the legislature comes up with, also Richardson. :banghead:

Even though with the passage of CCW it is no longer an issue for me, there was pretty much an understanding (though never established in a court case) that a semi-auto with no round in the chamber was considered unloaded even with a magazine inserted.

At the same time, I can't remember one prosecution of someone for carrying a concealed weapon during a righteous shoot. There was a man in my neighborhood about 10 years ago who shot a thug who attacked him during a Sunday morning walk and he was heralded as a hero.

New Mexico is very gun friendly, and getting better all the time. As soon as the governor signs the bill we will be rid of the onerous requirement to disarm in places that sell alcohol for off premises consumption. I am not sure if this will go into effect 6/15 or 7/1, but it will be great.

Law enforcement is very gun friendly as well, I have never run into an anti-gun rank and file LEO personally, but did testify at a CCW training requirements hearing following the testimony of Santa Fe Police Chief, John Denko, who was dead set against us. He is now the head of DPS unfortunately, but he hasn't been able to throw any monkey wrenches into the works.

I wish that we had a $35 a year gun club in Albuquerque. I belong to a great group, the Zia Rifle and Pistol Club, but our dues are $120 a year. I guess that is the difference between the big city and the boondocks.
