I live in Los Angeles and am having an impossible time finding a FFL to obtain my gun back from the police department. I was told by the detective that if I do not pick it up by the May 15th it will be destroyed. What are my legal rights of ownership? Does the police have the right to keep my gun past a certain date? And last, Is there a FFL in my area willing to help me? I will pay for you service naturally.

Thank You,
Michael~

The California DOJ has forms that must be filled out in order to retrieve firearms; you had best hurry, as there might be a backlog due to the surge in other activity. Also if I recall, state law mandated that destruction of firearms took place in june, but that may have changed. IMO the police don't like to return firearms, period. Especially LAPD. They want to discourage citizens from owning firearms, as evidenced by their CCW policies, seizures, etc. Check over at Calguns forum; they have much more stuff relative to life in SoCal for gun owners. California Rifle & Pistol Association (CRPA) also has likely the best info as far as specific procedure goes.

Not that we need to know here what they were, but how easy it is for you to get it back may also depend on the circumstances under which it got into their hands in the first place.

What are the FFL dealers you have contacted locally telling you? They just don't want to "go there"?
