The New Year has begun, and THR has been up for three years now. Maybe an update is in order...

First, I occasionally cruise the Net looking for shotgun sites. Outside of TFL, there's really nothing comparable.

I'm pleased to say that this is the best source for real world info on shotguns.

Some of the other sites have good stuff, but it's mixed in with lots of posturing and Alpha Male headbutting. Some forums resemble kindergarten sandboxes in their interactions.

I believe we have the best signal to noise ratio on the Net. The regulars here comprise a think tank with centuries of accumulated experience. Whether one has a query about a classic field gun, a clays competition tool or the baddest EBG, one can get some valuable input within hours, sometimes mere minutes.

Or, a query about technique, fit, form, loads, or why should one carry jerky at all times in the field gets prompt attention from folks who have BTDT.

All I have to say on this is, Thanks! My mod duties are quite light and usually pleasant and you are responsible......

On a personal note.....

A year ago I devoted some time to outlining some personal shooting goals and committed myself to working on them. Unlike most resolutions, I managed to stay on these through out the year.

I wanted to get better at shooting crossers, and also dropping targets. I did, through practice and more practice.

I also wanted to improve my mount. By shooting everything low gun, including trap, this has happened. Also, dry mounting at home with an 870 KNOWN TO BE EMPTY has helped. So have flashlight drills, flurries and plenty of BA/UU/R. I shot about 6K of rounds last year and it shows.

I also instructed perhaps 40 people, both High Roaders and those met by accident. Doing this not only gives me warm fuzzies, it helps to kill off those bad habits nigh 50 years of self taught shotgunning have forged. Often I get more out of a lesson than the "Student".

And, it's truly amazing how many fine human beings I've encountered near shotguns. Something about these tools and the purposes to which we put them must be uplifting.

Some lessons this past year has proved true....

Shotgunning is a Martial Art. It can build character, for we must learn to control ourselves before we can control the shot.

Whether a shotgun has Western Field writ on it or Westley Richards, we have to put the muzzle in the right place to hit.

As much fun as it is to talk about our gear, the software is more important.

Shotgunning is Loud Zen. And sometimes it's therapy.

Happy New Year....

Thanks for that essay, Dave, and for all else you do here and elsewhere.

We originally "met" several years ago on a now defunct site called GunSpot, whose Shotgun forum was moderated by one Randy Cain. Along the way I had a bout of less than stellar health, and by the time I returned to the keyboard after a several-months-long hiatus, GunSpot was no more. It took me a while to track you to these fair shores, where I promptly re-established communications. A lot of water has gone under the bridge since those GunSpot days. It is good to have a place like this, and I value it and the people who make it what it is.

Happy New Year right back atcha,

lpl/nc (who still wants to visit in person)

Dave, a big, personal THANK YOU! from me. You've made THR a more "fun" place overall, and your shotgun knowledge and expertise have been wonderfully useful to me (and, I'm sure, to many others). It's good to have you moderating the Shotgun area.

4998. I will post warning so Dave don't spew coffee.

Warning!

Thanks Dave!

Oh btw all the erasers are clean!

Your Resident Rebel,

:D

Thank you Dave, et all for your good service.
I went Duck hunting 1st and 2nd of 2006 in VERY wet conditions:uhoh: . I got 18 mixed birds with 82 rounds. Course I was using my Browning BPS 10ga with 1 5/8oz of #4 steel copper plated in BPS drivers thru a modified choke.
No geese yet.

I agree, this is my favoite forum on my favorite board.
Lots of good info, all well said and some fine people
Nice work Dave.

I'm new to THR. Been a shooter for over 30 years, but an unmitigated newbie to the world of shotgunning! [I just leaned back, looked over my shoulder at my shotgun and smiled.]

I know I already stated this in a thread weeks ago, but Dave, you and your counterparts in the shotgun forum have given me a ton of valuable input. You guys have made me laugh, think, learn and, along the way, a better shooter.

I find it remarkable that in the world of shooting, I can honestly say that I rarely meet anyone I can't get along with...and in the specific world of shotgunning and shotgunners, I tend to get along 'em all, the old and the young, the experienced and the rookie, the crusty old geezer, and the affable young hunter. I've found that, as in another of my "favorite worlds," that of retriever training, the common interest in the sport tends to draw well rounded men and women who are willing to share their insight and expertise, and can talk about the sport for hours over a cup of coffee or a glass of bourbon.

Happy New Year! Thanks again.

I think you've got a great site here Dave, no doubt about it. I've also found this section interesting and helpful at times. However, I feel strongly that ShotgunWorld is one of thee best for information on all things shotgun related.

From shotguns in general, to specifics like Trap, Skeet, Sporting Clays, reloading, tactical and gunsmithing, ShotgunWorld is hard to beat.

I will say though, that THR forum is easy to browse, is very reliable and is easy to use.

Either way, Happy New Year!

Thanks Dave!

Dave,

Thank you for all you do. You have been very helpful to myself and many others.

I'm trying to talk someone I work with to come out and shoot some trap this Friday. Maybe we'll run in to you... he has never fired his "new" shotgun and it has been over a month for me.

Happy New Year and keep up the great work... it is appreciated.

-Dan

(P.S. When is the next 101 instalment???)

I've been a shotgunner all my life, but only as a hunter. So I've learned a lot of bad habits over the years, despite being a pretty good wingshot at times.

I started hanging around here in shotguns early last year, mainly just because of the regulars here. Dave, sm, kudu, smoke and a bunch of others.

Well, here a year later I find myself with two new 28 ga shotguns, a new MEC, a couple new clay throwers and a wife who has become interested in the sport. I've also dusted off a couple of my old shotguns and taken them out. We will be taking sporting clays classes as soon as time and weather allows it.

Met a couple new shooting buddies also (BozemanMT and his wife). Actually I had met them last year but neither one of us were into shotguns then.

Thanks Dave and everybody else for making this fun!

Thanks Dave, you are greatly appreciated here. :)

The only thing you could do to make it better is get a 28 gauge 870 so you could really enjoy shooting.

+1

Oh Lee Lapin! Don't snicker, you do not know what all your PhD wife and I spoke about on the phone. :uhoh: :p

Yeah - I "are good" - ask Larry and Sandy.

Dave - does this mean I am off the hook and kudu gets to write stuff on the blackboard and clean erasers now? Please.

How come everyone is making side bets...ya'll know something I don't?

just want to add my sincere thanks.
This is the ONE forum I check in on each and every time I connect.
I've been gunning for a bit over 40 years, own and have owned a few hundred pounds of shotguns, and have probably emptied more hulls than most, but I always find useful info here. A civil bunch of folks with a great signal:noise ratio. (I do my part by keeping my post count intentionally low!)
Keep up the good work.

Remember: Friday is the first Friday of the month. In "Geezing" terms, that means that it is "Doubles Day." Shot my first round of 16-yd doubles last month, and I'm quite eager to do it again on Friday.

Hopefully, the board celebrit..... I mean Dave will be there. :)

I took a 3-1/2 year hiatus from shooting, but got back into it in late August / early September. That's when I met "The Man."

And yes, I feel the same way about Senor McC. and THR as you all do. I'm both a better shooter and a better person for being part of all this.

Thanks, Dave!!

BTW - my 870TC for dbls on Friday, but my tubed Citiori in 28-ga for Chinese, I reckon.

Ed

Im new and i really enjoy this site. thanks to everyone who makes this a fun, and educational experience. :)

Awwww shucks, folks.....

You give me too much credit. This is a community. The whole is greater than the sum of its parts.

A couple things...

Lee, I had thought we met on the old Prodigy network. On the shooting sports forum was where my Net Odyssey began. Thanks for the correction.

Preacher, you're very welcome. I have enjoyed your writings and the British flavor you impart. Yes, I know you're from Africa but if the cat has kittens in the oven, they're not biscuits....

Steve, Resident Rebel well becomes thee, though Hillbilly Philosopher also applies.

Gordon, duck hunting is wet indeed. One reason I never did it much. Sounds like some range time with that big 10 is in order....

Bozeman, thanks for the compliment. Keep Mrs Bozeman away from Steve unless you plan on getting a couple 28 gauges and a great salsa recipe.

Len, so true. Shotgunning must carry some mitigating influences. Some times I feel like this is the living room of a hunting cabin with a good fire going in the fireplace. We're sitting around after shooting while a couple exhausted dogs sack out on the hearth. We talk about the shooting and laugh about the missing.

SS-Z, that's a very good site with lots of info. It's just that this seems friendlier.

Boxcab, what may be my last Geezer shoot for a while will be this Friday. Schedule change, darnit. Look for me on 9 after 11.

Larry, I too have some bad habits as a self taught hunting shotgunner. This is a good place to learn better and have fun while so doing.

And just 2 more shotguns? You've gotten off lightly.

Kudu, thanks for that but if I had any more fun it'd probably be illegal.

Thanks,Kingcreek. Stuff like this makes my day....

Superreverb, can't take much credit for you. You are a very good shooter.

Thanks, Pale rider.....

Dave - A big "Thanks!" for all you do around here. This is far and away the most civil little spot I've found on the 'net. It allows me to satisfy (and feed) my equipment jones, and share what little knowledge I've gained.

The usual suspects around here are a treasure trove of information and experience, ranging from tactical (the real kind) to competition to hunting to plain ol' shootin' for fun.

I still vote for a 2006 THR dove hunting trip down Smoke's way... :)

Thanks Dave, you and this site is one of the big reasons I got into shotgunning in the first place. This place is a class act, and as you said - that's not really the case elsewhere...

You always have given knowledgeable and correct information and have greatly contributed to my love of the shotgun, the sports and fellowship that accompanies it all.

:D

while i dont post as much as some of you guys, i have read just about every thread since in this section at least twice. this is a great place to hang out and i attribute that to all the "sages" that we have here. thanks to everyone and a happy new year of shotgunning.

:)

I dont know if anyone else posted it, but shotgunworld.com is a pretty good place for anything on shotguns or shotgun related. It is a forum that is soley based on shotguns and shotgunning.

Preacher, you're very welcome. I have enjoyed your writings and the British flavor you impart. Yes, I know you're from Africa but if the cat has kittens in the oven, they're not biscuits....

:what: :uhoh: :scrutiny:

My cats are "fixed". If they have kittens (let alone biscuits), I'm blaming Steve...

 :D :neener:

Thanks, folks.

TR, it's amazing how much experience has shown up here. It's also highly gratifying.

STiTkacik, "...Love of the shotgun". So true. There's an emotional committment involved.

"Play with your shotgun. Dance with your shotgun. After all this is supposed to be fun."-Gil Ash.

Thanks, B5. Are you coming tomorrow?

D, already mentioned. Good site.

And thanks to you others.....
