Review of the Remington RM380

Then the Remington RM380 went on sale for $99.00

So I purchased another RM380 for my "Bathroom Gun"

If that's the case at that price I would think about getting it hard chrome plated by Metalife ($155). You would still be money ahead of what a comparable stainless gun would cost and not have to worry about the gun rusting from being in your bathroom.

That or else keep it well oiled in a Ziploc bag.

It’s nice that mags are stainless steel on the RM380.

Here in the south (not here by choice, man miss the Big Sky) you sweat so bad for almost 9 months of the year that mags where they mate with the plastic base plate tend to rust.

A major flaw in the design of the RM380 is its sights. They are hard to see against a dark background and are invisible at night. Has anyone come up with a way to improve them? Bright paint would be the simplest. Is there enough meat in the top of the slide that a good gunsmith could mill dovetail slots for aftermarket night or high visibility sights?

Yep, the RM380 has pocket gun sights.

No, I don't believe there is enough material in the slide above the muzzle to cut a dovetail.

I used a toothpick to add white gloss paint to the rear part of my RM380's front sight. Just like I have with many other guns of mine. The paint helps quite a bit and it has made it through several cleanings and oilings. Just use some brake cleaner on the front sight to degrease it before painting.

I saw a picture on the Rohrbaugh forum of a slide of a R9 or R380 with sights, but I didn’t find any other info on it.

I'm not sure that it would be worth the cost to do since the range a RM380 would be used at will be short.

I bought one of these with the stainless slide and blue anodized frame for the lady as a birthday gift. I don't typically choose pistols for others without their input, but I wanted it to be a surprise, and at $165 shipped after rebate, it was a gamble I was willing to take with all the positive reviews.

She loves it.

It's not a design "flaw"; they're the low profile and snag-free style you'll find on many deep concealment guns

My complaint is that they are low contrast. They disappear against a dark colored target. Painting them helps but Remington could have done far better at the factory.

Ya the sights disappear against a black target.

I did put a B27 target out to 75 feet once and the results were NOT GOOD. Four of the seven shots were outside the 7 ring - and I don't mean a head shot. I always tell myself its OK if I shot outside the 7 ring as long as I shot the target in the throat or the head.

These misses were in the shoulders and forearm, except for one - which was in the groin. The B27 is tall enough that I can console myself by saying "Hey I got him in the nuts - that would have stopped the attack I'm pretty sure"

Anyway - it was a very very large shot group.

For a DAO pocket auto-loader with non-adjustable sights at 25 yards, I think you did about as good as one could expect. :)

Yeah, at 25 yards I'm lucky to be able to even see the target, let alone hit anything with it!
