Review & Range Report > Baikal MP446 Viking

060710004-1.jpg

In 1990s, Russians decided to replace their time tested sidearm, Makarov PM with a weapon with more capacity and potency. The trials, codenamed Grach, started in 1993. The new pistol was to be capable of firing 7N21 round, a very hot ammo with AP bullets. Lot many handguns were presented in the trial but finally the handgun designed by Vladimir Yarygin and manufactured in Izhevsk Mechanical Plant (known to the world as Baikal) was selected. The pistol was named MP443 Grach or Yarygin Pya (Yarygin’s pistol). Grach is now the official side arm of Russian Army.
In 2001, a sporting version of MP443 was developed and was named as MP446 Viking. The only major difference in the Grach and Viking is the frame. Grach has a steel frame while Viking has a polymer one.

As per the Viking Manual (MP-446.776316.004.NC), MP446 Viking is available in variety of versions including:

- A version with a plastic frame, non-adjustable or adjustable rear sight, 112.8 or 120 mm barrel and a 18 or 10 rounds magazine capacity.
- A version with a plastic frame, non-adjustable rear sight, 112.8 or 120 mm barrel and a 18 or 10 rounds magazine capacity and a bright nickel-plated slide.
- A version with a steel frame, adjustable rear sight, 120 mm barrel and a 18 or 10 rounds magazine capacity

The version discussed in this review is the one shown in the pics; having a plastic frame, non-adjustable rear sight, 112.8 mm barrel and a 18 rounds magazine capacity. This gun is not NIB, has already fired around 750 rounds hence you would see signs of wear & tear in the pics below

For obvious reasons, Yes. Guess they just don't wanna share their love with everyone ;)

But it's one heck of a rough and tough gun.

Thanks for the review. What is up with the gunboard you linked to? 124 members and every name on the front page looks arabic.

I'm sure the Viking is like all the other weapons that come out of Izshvek. Crude, strong, and they work, work, work.

Yes, as jon in wv mentioned, Viking is crude and strong and more importantly, it always works no matter what. I own one and it has never disappointed me. Had over 1500 rounds of all types through it and never had any stoppages. Has an excellent trigger and is reasonably accurate. I would prefer a Viking over Glock 17 any day...

I'm happy we can get the old stuff though. I love my 91/30, M44, 1895 Nagant, and my Makarov (even though it's a Bulgy!).

It's comforting to know that if I want something Eastern European there are the XD and ZCZ EZ pistols.

The Russians don't.

My reason for preferring Viking over Glock17 is not inferior performance of Glock17 by any means. I have used both and they are wonderful guns though Viking is more robust and hardy. However, in Pakistan, a Glock17 sells for around Rupees 280 to 350 K (US $ 3800-4300 approx) :banghead: whereas a Viking sells for around 450-500 US $. Seeing this huge price difference, Glock17 certainly does not offer me 9-10 times enhancement in quality / performance. In your country off course, the situation is entirely different. :)

If possible, I would love to have both.........;)
