If I handed this one to Harrison Ford, he wouldn't know the difference.:D

In his novels Robert B. Parker usually has/had Spenser carrying a "Smith & Wesson .38 revolver with a short barrel." One would assume Model 10 or 15. Other times he kept a .357 Magnum in his desk drawer and would occassionally carry it. Again, I assume a model 19. On the TV shows, Hawk packed a Python, either nickle or stainless, or a Smith 629.

True, but when things got tough, Spenser brought out his Browning Highpower! Or a 44 Magnum levergun.

I searched the thread for Spenser - was thinking the same thing: the 38 revolver he carried, because he could easily always have it with him. Love the Highpower, but hard to argue with that logic.

I guess Indy was not worried about civilian casualties
Ain't Hollywood great? And to think so many people get all their information about guns from the television and video games.

I'm not sure that we need to make a political commentary when it comes to Indiana Jones and the movies. They are a fantasy after all. Let's not try so hard to suck the fun out of everything.

Couple come ta' mind ..

Peter with a FIE Titan Tiger (yeh, I know) in Dawn of the Dead (1978).

Capt. Rhodes in Day of the Dead (1985) with a 629 (.44 Mag-o-rama).

I think detective writers fall into cliches and think carrying a revolver makes the detective look quirky. They also like single malt scotch and obscure jazz. Yawn.

Or the side kick carries a big revolver to intimidate folks with his manly powers. Joe Pike or Hawk. But note each has serious relatioship and personal issues.

most sidekicks I know are regular guys-see Tonto and Pancho-OK, maybe not so regular but faithful....

I think this thread has gone off the rails and is now the "revolvers in movies thread" rather than the "luddites with revolvers" thread. No big deal, we came up with some good ones in there.

My thoughts exactly. He's not a luddite if he's carrying a revolver during a time period when carrying a revolver was the norm!

Edit to add:
I just remembered that I had posted something to that effect back on page 4.

That is true, but threads almost always seem to go off the rails and then they get closed by admin. But until then you can have fun with the trainwreck.

How about these guys? I mean come on, this came out in 1993, we all know there were plenty of good automatics to choose from in 1993!

Spenser is a prime example of the revolver as quirky personality nuance. He lives a dangerous life and anytime could be in serious trouble. So if he was up on things, he would have carried the HP or moved to a more modern gun as in the last books. It takes no more effort to belt carry a Glock 26 or equivalent SW or XD as a snubby. It was just a plot point.

Off topic, but the last Parker book and the Ace Atkins books were so-so. They were more about junior high level quips than plot.

I note that Jesse Stone carried a modern 1911 version - thus again demonstrating Spenser was just posturing.

Ford Fairlane (Andrew Dice Clay) carries a nickel plated Smith 38 Bodyguard in "The Adventures of Ford Fairlane"

William Sanderson's character uses a Colt Walker in "Last Man Standing".

Mal's pistol in Firefly was a Taurus Model 85 "completely covered by a brass casting to make it resemble a semi-auto handgun."

Jayne Cobb had a modified LeMat rrevolver, in the same series.
Colt SAA, Python, and Smith 15 were also used int that series.

Chow Yun-Fat carried a 4" Ruger GP100 as detective Tequila in Hard Boiled.

Marvin Boggs in the Red movies. He's usually carrying a S&W 460, and I think he qualifies as a luddite.

Lennie Briscoe, played by Jerry Orbach. He was an uncle of one of my good friends. Decent fella in real life from what I've heard. Never got to meet him.
I played golf with Jerry once. This was pre-L&O, he had a recurring role on Murder She Wrote at the time. He was a real nice guy.

Its been so long since I posted this, I read your post and the quote and I thought "Hey, he's an uncle of one of MY good friends too. I wonder if someone on here knows my friend.
Then I realized it was a quote of my post. Whoops.

Frank Black carried a snubnose for almost the entire "millennium" series. He came up against some neo-nazis toward the end of the series and switched to a .45

He also used a break-open (Webley, I believe)

The action figure has him holding the break-open revolver:

Nick Nolte carried a 4" N-frame S&W revolver as Detective Jack Cates in 48 Hours. The gun was taken from him at some point by the main crook ("Albert Ganz") and if I recall correctly Nolte is issued a 1911 during the hunt-down of Ganz.

LOL! That dredged up some old TV memories!

If I remember, they actually explain it a little. One of his buddies makes a comment about him carrying his old "Beat Cop Piece."

That is a pretty rockin action figure.

Captain Jack Harkness of Dr. Who and Torchwood fame carried a Webley Mk IV. I think he qualifies as a true "Luddite with a revolver."
