Revolver or Auto

I own and "like" a fair number of great autos and revolvers, and each have their merits.

I shoot the best with my 80's era police-trade S&W M64 4"bbl revolver that I paid $270 for.

Don't know why, it just is as it is.

The choice isn't truly dumb simple, nor is it seriously complicated.

A properly tuned auto is almost always more accurate than a revolver.

If you plan to use only factory ammo and shoot enough to be reasonably proficient, the auto generally beats the revolver.

It gets more complicated when one reloads ammo. The auto tends to spew brass everywhere. Recovering spent casings isn't a major headache at the range, so the auto is still pretty good.

Plinking and reloading with an auto is a headache because the brass tends to hide under things and becomes difficult to find. The search distracts one from the fun of shoot. A revolver outshines the auto in this environment.

I've regularly shot out past 100 yards with both the 44 S&W Model 29 and the 45 ACP in 1911. Also more casually with other revolvers and pistols.

Some autos are atrocious, some revolvers are great.

I do, however, stand by my statement: "A properly tuned auto is almost always more accurate than a revolver." The "almost" indicates there are always exceptions and close calls!

Cheers!

I shoot a semi-auto better on average than a revolver, but I prefer to shoot revolvers. Most people that say that they shoot a revolver better are generally shooting in SA mode which is fine. I mostly shoot that way anyway with most of my revolvers. I just don't waste ammunition, especially center fire calibers unless it is my carry gun which I will shoot double action. Why? Because I have to! :) It is DA only.

It depends on the gun and the load

I usually shoot only DAO semi-auto pistols, so revolvers do not shoot differently for me. The big difference is in reloading speed and how often I have to reload.

I like the 110 grain load in my .357 magnum and +P+ in my 9m.m., so recoil is similar. I would go with the semi-auto for defense, but the revolver is fine for target or plinking.

With rimfires, the autos have it as far I my shooting is concerned.

Personally, I am a better shot with a revolver. I do shoot in DA mode. I find the ergonomics and recoil on many semi-autos to be a bit squirrelly for my liking, especially composite frames like the Glock. I do love the feel of a 1911, but still shoot better with a revolver around 6" in barrel length.

A very wise man once said something to the affect of, "if you can't hit your target in the first 6 shots, a fourteen round magazine isn't likely to help!" I tend to agree.

+1
And truthfully I shoot single round only like the TC better!

I am very comfortable and accurate shooting either, but my groupings are generally better with the revolver in SA, especially my S&W M-10 with Hogue grips.

Depends on what revolver and what auto, and at what range.
I shoot a long barreled revolver with a tuned trigger slow fire better than most
autos except a 1911 with a tuned trigger. For me it comes down to barrel lenth
and trigger pull.

Wel-stated. That;s my experience too!

In general, I shoot 1911s better than anything else.
But I shoot my S&W revolvers pretty well also, and I never shoot a revolver single-action.
With some effort and concentration, I can shoot my Kahr P45 as well as a 1911, although I have to work a little harder to do it.

"Wheel gun" makes me think of guns that roll around on wheels, are towed by vehicles or horses, and are fired by means of lanyards. Revolving pistols, OTOH, I know something about, and I tend to shoot a medium-large framed S&W or Ruger DA revolver better than anything, when I have to shoot fast.

I use autopistols, too. If I didn't wear a badge for a PD that mandated certain DA autos as primary duty pistols, I would mostly use revolvers, except perhaps for a good 1911, and on occasion a Seecamp LWS-32. Of the several authorized primary duty autopistols, I bought the one that fit my hands the best, and have DA trigger strokes the most like an S&W K-frame: SIG P229 DAK.

I started in the mid'60s with a borrowed (from an Uncle ) Hi-Standard Dura-Matic. First handgun I bought ( actually Dad, I was 14,) was a S&W
Model 18 .22 4" Bbl. It took a while but the adjustable rear sight was much
better sight picture. In the '70s in the USN I qualified with the 1911 for
the ribbon.

These Days I have:

1911 full size .45 ACP

S&W 625 .45 ACP

as others have said, long range I'd say the 625 in SA is tops.

Shooting at 10-15 yards - it's a tossup some days the
1911 sometimes the 625 is better. Double Taps are
about the same as well.

I have a 617 .22 that's a tack driver but no .22 semi-auto.
It's great for Double Action warm up prior to switching to the 625

I've also got a CZ 75B 9x19 and a MOdel 60 .357 Mag 3" Bbl.
but usually shoot .38 special in it. I'd give the edge to the 75B
I think I shouud get a bit bigger grips for my long hands with the
60. Funny with the 60 I probably shoot it 80% DA
