If you were going to buy a new handgun would you buy a revolver or semiautomatic? And why would you choose that particular handgun?
Yes, of course, I would consider a revolver or semiautomatic. I have liked both, since at least the early Eighties.
I have reached the age at which I have to consider that my hands and arms are not aging well, particularly my right thumb, right wrist, and right shoulder. So, I select “old man guns,” but that does not mean small, lightweight weapons. I can still carry duty-sized handguns, and if selected properly, they hurt less, when shooting, than most small and medium handguns. A Glock Gen4 G17 is a nicely orthopedic, ambidextrous weapon.
I am functionally ambidextrous with most handguns, so shooting lefty remains a very viable option, except that my right hand does not always work so well, when I want to use it to run a slide. So, if an auto-loader, I look for plenty of real estate for grasping the slide, and a degree of lefty-friendliness, which does NOT necessarily mean an “ambidextrous” slide latch lever, which tends to get in my way, and, does NOT mean a reversible mag release button. I have been using my left index finger to push mag release buttons, since 1982 or 1983, when shooting lefty.
I will tend to select a handgun with a low bore axis, to reduce muzzle flip. Muzzle flip hurts my right wrist, whether my right hand is my weapon hand, or support hand. I love “classic” SIG pistols, but a high bore axis seems to be a common design characteristic of most SIG pistols, including the newer P320. I have kept only one SIG, for nostalgic reasons, my P220R DAK, my companion on police patrol from 2004 to 2015, but which was a torture device from 2011 onward, shooting the then-mandated .40 S&W duty cartridge. Being able to switch to 9mm for a duty cartridge, in a lower-bire-axis Glock G17, made life much more pleasant.
I probably have enough handguns, by now, to last a lifetime, though I may well buy a few more, on occasion. The above criteria drove my recent purchases: Glock G17 and G19x, full-sized 1911, and Ruger GP100 and Super GP100.
