My Service Six, .357 magnum. It's got hogue grips on it now.

Progun, yeppers that's a 1980 serial number.
I got my first FFL in 1978 and i clearly recall that in the early 1980s there were some customized 3" models floating around. I firmly believe that gave S&W the kick in the a$$ needed for them to produce some themselves.

If I had that gun I'd definitely spend the $30 to get a factory letter for it.
That would show where it was originally shipped and what the original barrel length was.

I forgot to ask earlier about the rollmarks on the barrel.
If there are any I'll wager they're closer to the muzzle end and not centered.

I've searched for years for a Genuine Lew Horton 25-3 but have never even seen one much less found one for sale. Of course I'm sure that if one were found it would be much more than I could ever afford. The going prices for my 3" Horton 29 have become obscene.

I did find a genuine S&W 3" model 57 at a local gunshow about five years ago.
It was new in box and the seller wanted $450 for it. (I even have a witness.)
During the 15 minutes it took be to get back from the ATM it was gone. :fire:
Now according to the real experts, a 3" blued Model 57 doesn't exist.
But I had it in my sweatly hands, and it was real.
So, somewhere in western Washington, somebody has MY gun. :neener:

If your 25-2 is like the other .45 & .44 conversions I have seen, the action will be icy mountain road slick.
And of course the balance is a close second only to a 5" short lug N-frame with target stocks.

After closer examination of the photo it appears that only the word Wesson remains on the left side of the barrel.
That is a sure sign that the barrel was shortened after it left the factory.

Your barrel is also that slightly different "plum" blue that appeared on S&W barrels at that time. That colour only appeared on barrels. Frames and cylinders were always the standard polished blue.
I have a 1981 vintage 6" 57 that has the plum blued barrel. I think it adds a lot to the coolness factor.

My latest acquisition

'70s model 28-2. Pinned and recessed. Stags by Jay Scott. Silky sweet D/A trigger. Glass rod S/A. I've only shot it once so far but with cheap Blazer 158gr ammo it shot 3.5" at 25 yards with my sorry, shakey hands at the controls.
Ahhhh....Now I'm eyeing a 6.5" 27 that I spotted at a local shop for $360.

Doc

Blues Bear, I've attached another picture, with a closer picture of the barrel. My last picture was so bad, it's no wonder you thought it said something on the barrel. Hopefully this is a better picture. There is no prining on either side of the barrel, and is is that plum color you refered to.

Blues Bear Thanks for the picture

Hi Blues Bear, Nice picture. Now for the big question. Do you ver see these for sale, and what kind of price do they usually bring? Regards, progun

Progun, sorry for the delay in answering. I haven't been on as much recently and I'm trying to catch up.

Yeah I see them for sale occasionally. Last one i saw in real life was $850! :what: They're getting kinda rare since they didn't make as many blued as the y did stainless. And a lot of the blued ones were full underlug and unfluted cylinder.

There is a 3" 629 that looks like mine.
I considered myself lucky to get $500 for the stainless I was forced to sell last year.

Contact member cdlubbe. I believe he might still have a couple of the each for sale.

Thanks for the info

Bluesbear, Thanks for the information. I was just curious about the value, since they don't seem to be listed in gun value books. Regards, progun

If you look at it under a magnifying glass I think it says, "Bullets come out here.
Do not insert into any orifice or use while bathing.
Do not attempt to shoot while operating heavy machinery.
Not approved for airline use."
:neener:

Now Heaven forbid it should actually say anything as important as even one of the four rules.

But it's a real pity that it has to say anything.

I took this picture with my cell phone, So the picture is a little dark, and a tad blurry...

But heres my cobra...
