Revolver recommendation for new owner

Save longer and get a Smith or a Ruger. Every Taurus revolver I've seen has problems from the factory. Ruger SP101, GP100, or S&W 686+ are all great guns if you're thinking .357.

I'd agree with several of the opinions expressed here.

1. There's S&W, Ruger, and everyone else;
2. The LCR is a good choice for carry
3. Everyone should have a .22

My favorite wheel gun is a 1970s era S&W Masterpiece. Price was reasonable, reloading means it's cheap to shoot, and it's very accurate.

Number two would be my Ruger Single Six, and number three-surprise- my Russian Nagant. Don't buy one of these unless you're really into reloading and developing loads ;-)

Can anyone give me a review/advice on Taurus revolvers?
I have owned one Taurus revolver. It had a problem with the trigger not resetting on a certain cylinder in DA. When I called them, I was told that it just needed to break in a bit. So, I tried to break it in a bit. When I got around to calling them after a pretty good break-in period, I was told they only cover return shipping under their "Lifetime Warranty" for the first 6 months. Eventually, I sent it back on my own dime. It appears they fixed the issue, but I no longer own anything made by Taurus.

Every maker has a lemon here and there, so my results may not be typical.

S & W K frame, 4", you cannot go wrong. A .357 will shoot .38 Specials. I would advise not to get a J frame snubbie as your first revolver, it will take some practice to shot well. Maybe you will want to carry a snub, but cut your teeth on a K frame. They never go out of style, and mine haven't lost any value in the last few decades. Happy Birthday.

Thanks for the advice everyone! I found out today that my dad might be willing to give me his old colt trooper mk III. Anyone know anything about this gun? Thanks again

My first issue police revolver was a Colt Trooper followed by a Trooper MKIII. I still have both since we were allowed to purchase them when we transitioned to something new. Great guns! It will be a nice touch if your first firearm is a Colt revolver.:)

I have owned five Taurus revolvers, now one, an old model 66 6"bbl. The more modern ones have all been hard to love: I had no malfunctions, but the hammers and triggers were really pretty bad. I had one securtiy six, supposedly the "pinnacle" for Ruger, and it was pretty good, IMO, but it just didn't live up to the hype for me and I sold it for a decent amount more than I paid for it. I'm glad people like them.

As stated by others, a police-trade S&W M64 4" can be a really good revolver bought cheap. I am, admittedly, a S&W revolver fan, but they earned their way into that position through the years on merit. I almost always buy them used. My favorites right now include a 4" pinned M67 and a 3"bbl M64.

The Colt Trooper Mark III is a great revolver. It is in fact my very favorite 357 mag revolver for shooting. Love the trigger! The general suggestion about the Trooper Mark III is that you resist dry firing it. You can hurt it and the only fix is to send it back to Colt if they still have parts.
