The poll would be easier to vote on if there was a clear winner or loser.

Both handguns are good to go. It will come down to personal preference for you, rather than a good vs. bad performance.

The issue you may find with the 1911 is aftermarket mags. Buy decent ones and you'll have no problems. Buy El Cheapo knock-offs and you will be introducing a weak link and possible failure point. Not as much of an issue with the Ruger because magazine supply is limited to not much more than Ruger.

I'm not going to vote because I don't have experience with these guns but between those 2 I would probably go with the RIA due to parts availability. I am actually kind of a Ruger P gun fan but they are no longer made & Ruger no longer supports them. On the other hand a member at Rugerforum.com reported that when his old P97 broke he sent it in and Ruger offered to either replace it with an SR45 or give him a major discount on a SR 1911. He chose the SR 1911.

I like the RIA guns, but a sub-$500 is not going to compare to a Ruger P-series pistol in out-of-the-box reliability on average.

I've owned both, still have the RIA. I'd say "both". The only time I had a malfunction with either have been with my out of spec reloads.

Mike J , I think I read the same thread on Rugerforum about that. Sounds like a good thing of Ruger doing that ! I'd jump on it.

WOW , looks like the Ruger is in the lead. I do like them both bbbuuuuuutt the Ruger is super reliable .

Both are well known for being reliable so it just boils down to personal preference.

Now 1911s in general have gotten a bad rap but this is mainly due to super tight tack-driver 1911s people want for target shooting type results. Plain jane milspec 1911s like the RIA work much better though not as accurate.

Same with the Ruger Ps not generally uber-accurate but stone-cold reliable.

My experiences with RIA M1911s has been positive; decent build quality and very reliable right out of the box. Same for all of my Ruger autos though I have no direct knowledge of the P-97s reliability.

I got the Ruger P97 !

Ok guys , I got a like new Stainless Steel Ruger P97. I figured that I could always get a RIA but the P97's are no longer made so I better jump on the P97. It is like new almost mint ! Like new in the box with all papers and a leather holster by Ruger and a full box of Federal Defense rounds for $350 and no tax !

Ruger hands down. I've never had an issue with 3 P-series Rugers, have had issues with just about every 1911 including most recently a RIA.

Looks go to 1911 though

I paid $350 total and NO TAX for it , the P97 ,the pack of ammo and the leather Ruger holster.
