Rice for tumbling

Most every tumbler manufacturer suggests what to use in their tumbler to polish brass.

Then a few folks try unproved material to use instead.

I wonder if these few folks do the same with their autos.

Manufacturer sayes to use 5W/20, neh, we're going to experiment and try olive oil this oil change.

Wonder how peanut oil will work for ATF?

Same logic.

Some folks are just "Wildcatters", living on the edge:D

Go ahead and try the rice, you'll never make that mistake again!

It is terrible. Don't ever use it?

I use rice because I don't have anything else. It is probably the worse media you can use. It gets stuck in the primer pockets and in the hole between the primer pocket and powder chamber. I have to look into each case and about 1 in 3 have a piece of rice stuck in it. :banghead:

Well you are sure able to solve this problem. Order corn cob or walnut media from one of the sources mentioned in this thread & never use rice again.

If you decap before you tumble you will always have to inspect the flash holes with corncob or anything else. Rice works fine for pistol cases, I've processed thousands with it. Works great in a pinch too, just go to the store, don't have to wait for it to be delivered.

Reading this thread reminded me to look into getting more media. In the past, I have ordered the 20/40 corncob blasting media from Drill Spot. I am sure that I paid around $40.00 for it shipped. Now it looks to me that it is still that much, but I would have to pay $22.00 for shipping. I guess it is a case of supply and demand.

I am going to buy and pick it up at Graingers the next time I drive past their store. $38.00 + Tax and no shipping cost. A real bargain for media as opposed to buying it in the small containers from Cabelas or your LGS

Absolutely FALSE! If you use 20/40 grit corn cob there will be NO media stuck in flash holes or primer pockets. 20/40 grit media flows like fine sand.

Unless of course your cases are wet when you toss them in the tumbler.

If you decap before you tumble and you DON'T inspect the flash holes you are a FOOL looking for problems. If the shoe fits,,,,,,,,

I have been reloading since the 50 or 60's, been so long ago I can't remember for sure. Been tumbling my cases for at least 30 years IIRC. Yes I decap before I tumble, NO I do not check my flash holes since I've been using 20/40 grit C/C media. I sure as heck did need to check the flash holes when I attempted the folly of using rice, but then I live & learn.

No I am not a FOOL, and NO I have NO problems with any of my reloaded ammo, could care less if said shoe fits or not.

Have you ever used 20/40 grit corn cob media? Be honest now.

You seem to be getting close to the wrong side of THR.

I have over the years processed hundreds of thousands of cases both handgun & rifle. In my 70 years I've always been able to plan ahead far enough to factor in the delivery time.
