Richland County deputies dies from self-inflicted gun shot

Staff reports

A Richland County Sheriff's deputy died Wednesday night in what authorities described as an accidental shooting.
Cpl. Scott Corley, a 10-year veteran with the sheriff's department, shot and killed himself just before 8 p.m. at his home at 100 Fairforest Road, according to a statement released by the department.

An acquaintance told investigators that Corley placed a revolver to his head and mentioned the term "Russian roulette" prior to pulling the trigger, the statement said. Corley had removed all but one round from the revolver prior to the shooting.

Officials believe Corley was intoxicated at the time, the department said. He was killed at the scene.

Corley is the husband of Richland County Councilwoman Doris M. Corley.

So.... was it accidental or intentional? Maybe just plain stupid.....

I remember reading a couple of years ago that a police officer is 30 times more likely to commit suicide with their issue firearm than they are to be murdered by someone else with any sort of gun.

The officer suicide stats are absolutely true. Those guys have to deal with a whole lot of the worst the world has to offer on a daily basis and for many of them it can really be too much.

The unofficial consensus around here is that it was intentional. We discussed it at work today (we work with RCSD on a regular basis).

Either way, stupid IMO.
