I am hoping to get someone help who has been down this road before. I deiced that I want to start a new project and build me a precision rifle for the range/deer hunting and maybe some coyote hunting. I fell in love with how customizable savage arms can be and I am learning toward getting the Stevens model 200 in 30-06.

I have been doing alot of searching the past couple of day and I am having trouble getting a straight answer on aftermarket parts for the model 200. I read somewhere that aftermarket parts for 110 will fit just fine with no modding on a model 200, as long as the model 200 is staggered feed. Which if I remember right all the new models 200 being made are stagger feed. So I was just wanting to make sure that if I do buy for example this stock, or this bolt handle it will fit on the model 200.

The next question I am hoping to get an answer for is it possible to switch out a 30-06 barrel with a 25-06 barrel if I ever had the dire need too? If I remember right 30-06 is considered long action and 25-06 is considered short action. So I didn't know if they made kits that give you the ability to switch between long action and short action. I am sure I will have more questions down the line.

Centerfeed is where most the aftermarket support is.

30-06 to 25-06 would just require a new barrel.

if you want to swap barrels you will need to stay in the same action size.
25-06 is a 25 caliber necked down in .30-06 case. .270 is a .277 necked down to .30-06 case. You can switch between these three long action rounds.

Short action will give you swapablity in .308, 7mm-08 .243 and .260 remington

Glad I was told wrong on 25-06 being short action, and it will just take a barrel swap.

Doing some more searching and it looks like I was confused and savage changed to centerfeed is after 2006. So all those long action stocks on midway will probably not work for a new model 200. What sucks even more is I not having much luck finding a long action centerfeed stock period. :banghead: Which explains why I keep seeing 308; I can find all the short action centerfeed aftermarket stuff I want. lol

That $95 stock isn't any better than the plastic stock that comes with the Stevens 200. If you want it to be black, just paint the original. If your want a better stock, come off your hip a little and get at least a Bell & Carlson or an HS Precision.

Oh i was just using that stock as an example it was the first one I saw on midway for long action. I would like a bell & carlson but I can't find any that are in centerfire long action just short action. So I am just thinking about what you said paint in black and call it good.

I think that you can order a long action direct from B & C.

Well I didn't see anything on their website, but I might call them tomorrow and see if they do make stocks for a long action. Funny thing is while I was looking around on their website I noticed they are from Dodge City Kansas and that is I think 3 hours away from me.

now wait.... you can certinly use .308 sized cartridges in a long action with no problems. I had an old 30-06 that I swicthed barreled to a .308 with a take off 24" savage barrel. I wish I had never sold that rifle. I was able to shoot surplus and walmart range ammo to the same poi as my 1/2 moa reloads. that rifle just shot. I liked the idea of using a long action because I had nothing holding me back from changing to a different round. plus, if you reload, you can seat your bullets out farther to gain a bit more powder space and not be limited by mag length. also, with just a bolt head swap, you can go up to magnum cases as well. have fun!

the only difference you will have to be aware of in barrels is tennon/shank size. I dont know the specific year, but the switched from a small shank barrel to a large shank barrel. (different thread sizes) this is not interchanhable. whats nice though is that everybody seems to be making aftermarket barrels for savage rifles nowadays. search around and get a good quality barrel and you will be very happy.

try here as well. they have tons of aftermarket barrles for really good deals. i dont know if you know what it takes to change out a barrle, but its really easy with All the proper tools. a new barrel in the cartridge you want, making sure its the right shank diameter, a go gauge, and a no go gauge if you really want, (in said caliber) a barrel nut wrench and a vice with some wood pieces to help hold the barrel. using pine works really well. and its soft so it wont mare the finish. hope this helps and keep us posted....
