Rifled barrel vs rifled choke

Short answer is maybe. Most all of my experience has been with rifled and extended rifled choke tubes in smooth bore barrels out to extreme ranges, 300 yd gong. I believe the fully rifled barrels are pretty much sabot slugs only and probably more accurate. I've shot thousands of foster slugs threw the rifled tubes and they really shrank my group size. You have to try different brands of slugs and find the kind your gun likes.

I think you will find both basically give the same desired result. 12 Gauges are not going to yield tack driving results but putting a spin on that 1 1/8 oz chunk of lead will defintely assist in the precision.

:)

Fully rifled barrels are for sabot slugs only. Rifled chokes are for "Rifled" slugs and Brenekkes.

It depends. Fully rifled barrels oft are more accurate. Tubes, however, are more versatile and still accurate enough(Minute Of Bambi) for the job.

And how accurate do you need? Most shotgunned deer are shot inside 50 yards.

I have been using smooth bore barrels and slugs for years. I wanted to upgrade the accurracy and range. After reading some reviews of the sabot slugs, they were getting some good range with them. To go to the sabot will mean a new barrel or a new gun vs changing chokes. Just wondering how the two compared and if it was worth the extra to go with the sabots.

If I can chime in with a question... I was thinking of the same thing for my "do everything" boomstick, just to get a little more practical range out of slugs. I've got a 20" rifle sighted smooth bore slug barrel, and was wondering if a rifled choke would give the "doughnut" pattern a rifled barrel does if you shoot buck out of it.

My 20" smoothbore 870 is more accurate with an IC tube than a rifled tube shooting Foster slugs.

I've heard the full range of experiences.
Some say they group slugs better, some say it doesn't help, others say it's even worse.

The biggest thing to remember is if you get a rifled tube then try A LOT of different slugs.
Just finding the one your smoothbore/IC choked barrel likes may be all you need for accuracy.

On the flip side, every rifled shotgun barrel owner I know can get 3-4" or better accuracy with almost any saboted slugs they buy.

What kinds of groups do you get with your smooth bore?
I can consistently hit a 10" steel plate at 100 yards with Brennekke modified foster style slugs out of my ghost ring sighted Mossberg 500. (I only hunt deer out to 50 yards with it)
They group the best of any rifled slug I've tried.

Mine too. I've tried different slugs and the rifled choke tube hasn't done a thing to improve accuracy over the IC choke.

The rifled choke tube does however disrupt buckshot patterns so if you intend on using both buckshot and slugs the rifled choke is the worst of both worlds.
