I'm planning to drive cross country from Arizona to NYC before returning to the Middle East and may take a shotgun and riflle along. Can I legally leave these arms with my brother until next year when I return from the ME and drive them back to AZ?
ps, the rifle is bolt action, and shotgun a pump.

To speak to someone directly at the division of licensing services in NYC, call 646-610-5550 for Handgun Permits and 718-520-9300 for Rifle & Shotguns.

My advice would be to find an alternative to NYC. The process to "legally" leave your firearms with your brother could take up to a year and cost you some money.

Just stepping into this city and stopping without permits can get you in a heap of trouble :(

You do have some options

First off you need a license to have a firearm registered. Second the Rifle/Shotgun division will no longer tell you what you need for the application over the phone.

Now you do have options. Being caught with an "illegal" rifle or shotgun in NYCis not even a misdemeanor. Its a violation of the city code (same as having an open container in public). Most rifle/shotgun owners in NYC do not have permits. It is actually cheaper to break the law than to follow it. The city council also plans on establishing liability insurance for all rifle/shotgun permit holders which will likely cost thousands. (Personally I think this is a GOOD thing as it will finally make it impossible to comply with the law making illegal gun ownership the norm).

Ever notice why the NYPD goes after illegal handguns so vehemently but not rifles/ shotguns or pre-ban AWs???? Well state law is very strict when it comes to illegal handgun ownership. The same can not be said about illegal rifle/shotgun ownership.

In the end it is your choice. I am not a lawyer and of course there are risks. Here is the simple truth of the matter:

You are probably more likely to go to jail for having a license than not having one. If you have a license they know exactly who you are and if the law changes or you get a parking ticket they WILL send a six man special unit to your house. This happens quite often. If you don't have a license when they arrive you simply say "what guns?"

I have a license and fellow NYC gun owners have never let me live that down.
