I was working at a sporting goods store doing some maintenance outside and a guy parked by where I was working. I saw he left his windows down a bit and asked if he could do me a favor. "it depends" he replied... I said I was going to be running a blower in a bit and did not want any dust going into his car... he appreciated that and I saw he had a cane and a rifle bag... I walked over and held the rifle case and asked if he brought one in for repair. He said no he was thinkin of selling or trading. I did ask what it was and he got my attention when he said what it was. A Rossi 92 had been on my radar for quite a while. He named a price... one of about half of new and I said I would take it if he did not work out a deal with the store... I said take your time I will be workin out here for a while.

I could not believe it when as I was going to leave a note on his car he came out carrying the rifle still... I know some like em and some do not. I have marlin and Winchesters in 357 and 44 respectively. I am fine with the caliber and the barrel length.
Best part was I gave him 5.00 more for following me to my bank instead of catchin up with him later and he threw in a 35.00 box of 44 special factory loads and a 30.00 or so rifle case... I was not expecting to find a used 92 for anywhere close to the 250 I paid let alone get 50 plus in accessories.

It should make a great truck gun for here in Ohio... should handle just about anything short of a Bigfoot- even then should be respectable enough with heavy loads :)

Do any of you know how the bores usually run on these? I know the Winchester and marlins tend to be bigger than the normal .429 sizes and usually need larger lead...

Don't buy any scratchers or play poker for at least a couple of months as it appears that you have used up ALL of your good luck for awhile. :)

Congrats on the great acquisition ... most, if not all, of us reading your post about it are a bit jealous. ;)

Enjoy!

Well then I won't mention last months 1970's era Marlin 39a in reallllly great shape- almost pristine for 275.00

I actually got a great deal last week on a 9mm Just Right Carbine but not quite but almost in the half price category... I need to replenish my emergency toy money fund... deals are out there if ya keep your eyes and ears open... it is a good thing to not be needing anything in particular and having "needed" roles filled...

And I read of deals on forums that guys get and I get a lil yellow with jealousy myself :) We all take turns :p

I haven't had or shot one in 44 Mag, but that is just about ideal. I didn't do well with one in 357, but love the one I have in 45 Colt. So light and handy. They don't come with sling swivels but I recently picked up a sling set, can't recall from where (probably Steve's Gunz) consisting of a butt cuff, sling, and a front swivel off a barrel band. Neat.

Great deal! Been in your situation a few times. Went to the mall for lunch with a buddy and he says lets go look at dicks sporting goods at hunting stuff and guns. I said okay even though they generally don't have anything but the sale tag caught my eye on a 44mag H&R Handi rifle with a semi heavy barrel. $100 i couldn't pass it up and its a shooter. Went to Gander one day with a buddy after lunch and same thing happened to you. Guy was selling a S&W model 10 and they lowballed him and he took i knew the counter guy so i asked what they would sell it for and he said ill price it $225. another $25 for layaway and my buddy had a nice model 10 and a couple boxes of ammo. I almost got a Ithaca deer slayer, one of the older models for under $300 but after calling Ithaca to see when it was made gander would not tell me the serial number over the phone and an hour later it was gone. Ithaca said it was an older one and should have went for more than the $300 they priced it at.

You're using up a lot of good karma. In your next life you might have to pay it back by always having to pay full retail plus 20%. I'm working off my bad karma by always hearing about good deals the next day after the item has been purchased by someone else. What I wouldn't do to get a deal like you got on that 39A.

The 39 was actually listed on my gun club board for 300.00... I walked away twice... a few of us were going to go get lunch- I went back and wrote the number down. I did not really expect it to be still available since it was up for a couple weeks. The guy answered- I asked for pictures but he would be several hours before he got home... I said no problem. I ask what kind of shape it was in and he said pretty pristine then told me the history and how he kept it clean and oiled even though it was not shot much... I knew by the way he was talking I wanted it- I asked if he was coming back down this way since he was about an hour north... he said no- I asked if he would come down a bit if I drove up that night to get it ... sure he said- I said consider it sold even without the pictures. I had always liked the 39 but never had gotten around to buying one back in the day and the prices keep me away... I have a list in my head of guns that are always on my radar for "deal" type pricing... I am not in a hurry... sometimes I find several in a short time... sometimes its a while between "deals"

Now I will share a secret about such and I will loose some of you here. I know it works because I can find stuff all the time in reality. I believe in Gods spiritual principle of sowing and reaping. Oddly enough it works for me with guns even :) I have outright given guns away and I have made deals to others or available to others and have ALWAYS been rewarded for such..... If you give with the right heart it ALWAYS works.... Sometimes I even just outright ASK God to help me find a particular item... When I remember to do so it is amazing how often it happens for me. I will say start small if your faith is not big and watch what happens... you really and truly can not out give God...

I really want to encourage you to try... and believe... and see what happens for you...

Good to hear about your very fortunate turn of events in acquiring not only the Rossi Model 92 but the Marlin Model 39A! Thanks also for your inspirational thoughts: I will have to give it a try!

Congrats on your Rossi score! I only have one, a stainless .45 Colt rifle w/24" octagonal barrel, but I love it! I got a good one. Wouldn't mind having a few more Rossi's.

My best score was a 1947 Enfield No. 5 Jungle Carbine, found in a pawn shop for $150. I believe they had no idea what it was, it was set up as a deer rifle and they look kinda funny anyway, easy to mistake them for something that's been Bubba'd. Last one I saw at a gun show was priced at $800! But that was just ridiculous.
