Hello,
I've searched around and have read a handful of threads on ring height for scope mounting, and am still a little confused.

Looking hard at getting a Leupold VX-II 2-7X33 for my Remmy 788. Is there anything out there that provides a recommended ring height? Or is this more in the "whatever works best for you" realm?

I suppose I can pretty confidently eliminate high rings since the objective on my proposed scope will not require extra height for clearance.

What about the monte carlo stock on my 788? Is it going to maybe or probably cause me issues if using a low set of rings? I like the thought of low rings to lower the overall cg of the rifle, but am not opposed to mediums.

Any thoughts or pointers out there? Thanks. (I know I can buy a set of each and see what works; but it's easier to sit here and ask)

I don't seem to recall the 788 having a monte carlo stock. Aftermarket? Anyway...the lower your scope is the the bore the better off ya are.

Low rings should suffice for an objective of that size on a 788. The stock shouldn't be an issue. You generally want to go as low as you can but with a 32mm-33mm objective, lows should work.

littlelefty, the Model 788 does have a monte carlo configured stock and I agree with Pacsd and Strongbad in that a scope should be mounted as low as practical. Like Strongbad said, a 33 mm objective should permit the use of low rings on your rifle.

I'll be darned. Yours looks like 22 inch barrel. I couldn't remember how that stock was/is. That's a real dandy all right!!! The one I bought back in 83, a .243, 18n inch barrel for my son now is in his safe in Vegas and he has dressed it up some with a new stock and bi-pod but, I know it has a 3 X 9 X 40mm scope on it.

Pacsd - yes, mine has a 22" barrel, a left handed bolt, and is chambered in .308. I stumbled on it about 20 years ago. Very nice rifle, and quite a shooter.

Yours is not considered a monte carlo stock, just a different style. I have a .223 with this style stock, I have to use medium rings on mine tho, I have a Simmons 6.5 X 18 X 50 on it, the front lens is too big in diameter to use the low rings. Don't know how your trigger is, smooth or not, mine wasn't! When I got mine 20 yrs ago, there wasn't any manf. who made replacement triggers for the 788. I just replaced the orig. with a Timney 2 weeks ago, now set at 38 oz., first 5 shots into the same hole at 100 yds, truly amazing difference. Good luck with yours, very nice looking rifle.

I have a 788 with a Right hand bolt. If yours was right-handed, I would suggest that you get high rings. The reason is that the ejector (on the right hand, at least) will tend to toss the spent cases out at a high angle. This angle is so steep that on a scope mounted on medium bases, the empty case will hit the cover on the scope adjustment. I finally got around to correcting this in the mid-90's after having the rifle for 20 years. It is still a great shooter.

However, since you have a lefty, the scope adjustment cover should not be an issue and a medium ring should be OK.

That said, you should use the ring that allows your eye to align most easily with the scope. The higher the comb on the stock, the higher the ring.

Dr T - good input; thanks. Even though mine is a lefty bolt, it ejects out the right side. I'll check out the angle of eject before buying rings.
