What is THR's opinion on the Rock River Arms CAR A4? I am planning on purchasing my first AR in the near future and this is the rifle I am leaning towards. I want the A4 style as I would like the ability to easily and quickly mount optics on the rifle. This will be a plinker and defensive rifle. I have a Saiga now but have been bitten by the AR bug and now I would like to sell the Saiga and get an AR. So would this be a good rifle to purchase? Also what would be a good price for pay for such a rifle?

I didn't care for the trigger on my RRA lower as it was a bit heavy and less crisp than what I have on my stock Colts. However, that just negates the carbine for more precise shooting in my book. In other words, I don't group as well with it as when I put a Colt lower on the same CAR4 upper at 100 yards. The upper would shoot 1 MOA groups, so the barrel, etc. was/is terrific.

The bolt/carrier assembly functions well and the gun runs well.

The collapsing stock is nominal - no complaints.

I would by RRA again, but I would like to see better stock trigger groups (but my sample size is ONE, however, and so this may be a sampling issue).

I also own a RRA Varmit upper that has done very well and would buy another one of those as well.

My A4 S&W MP15 has one sweet trigger. I got 9/16 inch groups at 100 yards shooting just plain remington 55 grain fmj ammo. Of coursc I have a nice Nikon on top of the thing.

Thanks for the info Matthew. But I know I will probably seem crazy if I say this but I am not really interested in building my own right now.

I completed my build for what ended up being a RRA middy not too long ago. When new, it was really tight. After some shooting, everything seems to have worked together & is easier to work with. I really like (dare I say love?) my RRA  and recommend them highly!

Whoa, me neither. Not trying to get you to monkey with pliers and drivers and widgets and all.

What I was suggesting was to buy a COMPLETE lower and a COMPLETE upper. Taking them apart and putting them together is easier than field-stripping a Glock. They're totally modular, and almost all the magic happens in the upper anyway. By buying them separately, you can save a lot of cash, and get exactly the components you want.

To install a collapsible stock takes a specific wrench, but that's about it. And you can buy a COMPLETE lower with stock already attached if you're just not comfy with it.

I'm mechanically inept, so I don't do the whole Lower Parts Kit thing. I just buy upper and lower complete (but stockless), add the stock I want, and off to the range goes I.

Just saying that you might find better prices/options if you buy the two halves separately. Modularity, doncha know.

Good luck in your search,

-Matthew

Too funny. We all certainly see things from different viewpoints. I sold my Bushys and Colts (ya, I know....I'm a heretic). I love my RRAs. The thing that shines the most to me on my RRA Eilte CAR A4s is the national match 2 stage trigger which is the standard on their ARs.
