I'm considering buying a Romanian SAR 1 AK47, I know very little about the AK lineup, as I'm one of those AR guys.

Can anybody give me an opinion on these AK's ?

It comes with a red dot sight, about 200 rounds of ammo, and 2 or 3 mags. From the pictures, it looks to be a nice rifle.

Thanks for looking.

irish,

Insure the front sight is not canted. The original trigger may be prone to slap. The folding stock has been added, insure it is solid.
I have owned mine for about 8 years, it is solid and dependable.

The red dot is a Wally World special, it adds no value. What ammo are you getting, this DOES make a difference as it may just be the junkiest milsurp on the planet. The AKM will shoot it no prob, but do not expect minute of pie plate accuracy, and also, cheap ammo doesn't necessarily add value. Mags do, however. What mags are they? Who makes them? Handle that rifle before giving money, ensure its stock is mated to the trunion properly and is SOLID!

What is the asking price, if I may ask?

I think they are fine rifles. I remember when they sold for 295 new in the box

I know it's a cheap red dot, I have a Bushnell TRS-25 to replace it. As far as the ammo, I'm not sure. The stock that is on the rifle is made by Tasco, it also comes with the original wood set.

The asking price is 650.00.

$299 with two mags back in the early 2000s. After 1500 rds the CAI fcg gave up on mine. I replaced it with the Tapco G2 and its back to action. Even better with that smooth crisp trigger. Nice thing about it, stands true as an AKM. If you can get a SAR 3, a much better deal.

Lil high dude.

Your choice of red dot is good, that's one of my faves.
Good that it comes with stock furniture, though.
Who makes the mags? Milsurp? Promag? What are they...

Me, I'd shoot $550. Tell him to keep the red dot, throw in the rest, and don't budge.

Looks like a tasco red dot ($30), tapco side folder ($40), probably utg rail mount ($15), surplus mags ($12 each), ammo ($60) and it is not threaded!!! 500 for the rifle in stock form with mags and ammo.

The Tasco red dot and UTG side mount do the job, but as was said add little value. The Tapco side folder IMHO is awful. Have him remount the wood and make sure its tight in the receiver.

Mags are OK as long as they are not the plastic "bullet" Bulgarian which are not really surplus but new production for the US market, and a poor imitation of the "circle 10" military mags, but AIM has recently had steel comblock AK mags for like $9 each. Something doesn't look quite right with the front handguard and gas tube wood, maybe its just a bad photo.

I'd go maybe 500-550 with the above caveats.

I thought the same. Bad photo.
I also agree, plastic mags are bad news.
I stick with my original conclusion, with stock furniture and if it's in great shape with steel mags.

$550, DO NOT B UDGE!

It's wearing a Tapco sidefolding stock. I think those stocks are wobbly junk, so ask if the original wood stock also comes with it.
See if you can shoot it first to check for reliable function and look for the canted sights others have mentioned. If the magazines are Bulgarian polymer Circle 10 or steel mil-surp, you should be good.

Having said that, if I saw a decent SAR-1 in a gun store at a reasonable price, I'd buy it.
Make sure you toss in what you can get a new WASR for as a negotiating point.

I've heard nothing but good things about the SAR1. By all reports they're much nicer than the later WASR's, though WASR's have gotten much better in terms of overall build quality lately.

That one looks like a "ban gun"

No provision for a muzzle brake and no bayonet lug.

Pass.

For the money, you can get a "real" AK.

Well that's what an SAR 1 is! =) I'm curious what you consider to be a "REAL" AK? Please don't tell me one of those $2000 Arsenal Jobs!

Well, odds are he isn't talking about a "real" ak. Those are full auto. If he's referring to a genuine semi auto AKM, I believe he's referring to a Saiga, and yes, possibly reworked by Arsenal. Not all of their rifles are over $1000.

SAR-1's were/are Ban "Work Around Rifles" no bayo or Brake.
The Slant Brake is only needed when firing Full Auto, so no loss.
You can fix the bayo lug with a mig/tig welder or a plate and 4-40 screw.
I bought a kit to fix mine back in the day.

The main thing people like about the SAR-1 is the Receiver Dimples.
These reduce/eliminate the "Mag Wobble" most of the WASR's had.

I've never even considered selling my SAR-1, paid $250+ shipping and transfer from SOG in 2001.

Most AK's are going for $500+ these days.

If you really want a brake, there's a number of good options available, including just threading your muzzle or replacing your entire gas block with one that can accept the 24mm brakes.
