Well howdy yall.

I have been wanting to get one of the recent Romanian Tokarev TTC pistols out now. They are going for fine (low) prices and they look like a hoot. But, I have read theh all had to be imported with a weird safety located below the slide stop.

Is that a deal killer? Just how bad are the lawyer inspired tacked on safetys that comr on Romanian Tokarevs? They are a huge eyesore, but will they affect function or reliability? Should I save my money for another unmolested Bulgarian Makarov?

Thanks for the help all!

I do not think that is carry safer feature. Even if the TT didn't have that "importation compliant" safety I would still choose the Makarov.

Of the 3 flavors of TT-33 Variants that I have (Pole, Romy, Yugo), I like the Romy safeties the best. My two examples operate a bit more smoothly than those on my Poles (which are in about the same location) and are in a better in-grip position than those on my Yugos.

O'course, I like my three Russian TT-33s best. :D

I just pretend its not there as use the pistol as originally designed.

The ones on the Chinese imports are the hardest to ignore.

Seems 7.62x25mm ammo has REALLY gone up since the last time I looked into it.

Seems it is much higher than 9x18mm... troubling.

The OP didn't mention carrying the TTC, just that he's interested in owning one.

In fact, he just acquired a Bulgarian Makarov last week, and loves it. He even stated he may carry it at times. That thread is still fresh on the mind. I think he's just wanting to broaden his Commie-Bloc horizons.

Cooldill, I did just get one of the Romanians. Yes, it has the goofy safety lever. I have not yet gotten to shoot it, and it will be several weeks yet before I do. But, it's certainly a good-feeling gun (as is my Makarov, but I already told you that!)

Love is a strong word.

And with my Bulgy Mak, it is a true word!! :D

I feel as if I am in the edge of a great precipise... a new journey in my gun adventures, and that is the world of surplus eastern blok handguns. :)

There are plenty of used Chinese Toks out there in 9mm. The safety on this one doesn't bother me. It has been a dependable pistol for me and fun to shoot. It's just a range toy, so I don't worry about the safety one way or the other. I think they called it a Model 213. If you are patient you can probably find a decent one on Gunbroker for around $200. This one was at my LGS and I traded something I didn't want for it.

I own a Romanian TTC and it is a fun gun to shoot. I removed the dumb kludged safety as it kept activating itself during shooting. There is a hole, but the gun functions as it is supposed to.

The safety on my Romanian isn't bad. Easily flipped off with my thumb.
It is only a trigger block safety though.
Also, just beware that the Tokarev design does NOT use an inertial firing pin. That is, when the hammer is down, the firing pin protrudes from the beach face. So, do not lower the hammer on a live round. Tokarevs were made to either be carried at half cock, or with an empty chamber.

I got a couple of Chinese, to me the safety is the least offensive.

I just removed it on one and put some wood grips to cover the holes.

I'm a lefty, and it seems the Romanian and Polish safeties would be an annoyance.

I removed the safety on my Romanian TTC and blocked up the holes with silver soldered filler screws.
Replaced the worn out chopped up slide stop with a Chinese version too.
The Chinese safeties are actually the easiest to deal with.
Simply drill a blind hole and silver solder a stop pin in place to block the safety in the ready to fire position.

I have a Polish Radom built one and have no trouble with the safety......does not bother me at all and functions as intended. These guns are a hoot to shoot and the 7.62 x 25 round really rips. I buy PPU PRVI Partizan ammo and sometimes the Red Army bulk pack steel case stuff. Never an issue with any of it.

The days of a thousand rounds for a hundred bucks are gone sadly.

Yeah. The last time I ordered some (maybe ~8 years ago?) was because I figured that the low-price days were soon coming to an end.

IIRC, Century briefly had Polish 7.62x25 milsurp for, like, $80-$90/can ... so I grabbed several more for the bunker. ;)

13-14 years ago I also took advantage of some good pricing on some commercial, boxer-primered, n/c S&B FMJ 7.62x25. For SD ammo, I replace the FMJ with a SP or HP.

Okay gents, after thinking about it I am going to pass on the Tokarev.

The ammo is just too high, and the lawyered up safeties are not cool. Yes they can be removed, but it leaves a nasty hole.

Another Bulgarian Makarov it is! :D
