i went to a gun show the other day looking for an ak type gun. didn't really find what i was looking for. i know dunhams sport carried a few so i went to take a peek. one that cought my eye was the romanian wasr-10. for $350, i was so close to getting it except for a few things: out of the box the gun seem over greased and when i cocked the handle back and slowly let it go, it got stuck. could this be due to the over grease or not a strong enough spring? also i didn't like the wood finish.

towards the end is what i'm talking about and if this is an issue leading to jams. is it worth it? budget is $400 for a decent ak.

I bought mine at a gun show as well, for about the same price.
Unfortunately, Cosmoline packing is pretty much standard for
AK's and SKS's shipped in bulk and purchased by a dealer.
A field strip, some clean rags and a little bit of "elbow grease"
(pardon the pun) should remedy your Cos mess. As for the
charging handle getting stuck, that doesn't sound all that promising.
Didn't you take up the issue with someone working at that booth?
How did you eventually get the handle to advance back into the forward
position? In any event, IMHO the Romanian WASR is a great hunk
of weapon for the money. I've had no issues with mine, even though
I subject it to hundreds of rounds of Wolf, and rarely clean the sucker.
Well, good luck. If you don't get one of the rare lemmons, I think you'll
end up being really pleased with the purchase.

By the way, the original furniture on a WASR is not pretty, but personally
I didn't buy mine for that. I found that a good swabbing of the wood
with something like Liquid Gold makes the stock and foregrip look half-way
presentable. I also added an aftermarket recoil pad to the butt, which
made the rifle all the more pleasurable to shoot.

This is quite common with brand new fire control groups. If you don't pull the charging handle all the way to the rear and let it loose, it'll hang on the hammer. Firing the rifle breaks it in, and smooths the hammer surface.

The WASRs aren't packed in cosmoline, but you will find evidence of cutting oil and metal shavings from and angry beavers at CAI in some examples.

Nothing is wrong with the rifle, so long as you inspect it for canted sights, and gas blocks.

i was thinking about getting composite material to replace the wood or a cheaper route and stain it. my buddy is also buying an ak type gun but he wants me to buy it first. yeah, i don't need anything special of fancy, just another range gun or back up hunting gun.

I have a wasr 10 and I love it. It is a good cheap rifle as long as you check out the front sight to make sure that it is not canted. Some other folk have complained about the gas port being blocked but mine is fine. When you open the receiver you have got to pull it all the way back and let it go forward on its own. This will smooth out after you shoot it a few times. The trigger is replaced on the wasr by a tapco G2 to make the firearm 922R compliant. The finish is a parkerized type and the stock is laminated. Not much to look at, but you can always change out the furniture. I would recommend it, if for no other reason than the price. Good luck

trigga, I had the same problem with the charging handle on my first WASR (yes I now have more than one). As nalioth said, it will "break in." Once you fire it check the bolt carrier each time after you fire to make sure that it went all the way forward. Mine wanted to stop about 1/4" from completely forward, but it wasn't really an issue because the bolt was already rotated in the locked position. After maybe (don't really remember exactly) 30 rounds it hasn't done it since, and I'm now t probaly 2000 rounds through the sucker.

Get the WASR. I love mine. They are dirty and greasy from the factory, just clean it real good when you first get it and it is good to go. They do look rough, but you can definitely make the wood look nice if you want. Here's mine after sanding and 9 coats of tung oil over a 2 week period:

Buy it and then just sand and stain the wood yourself. WASRs are as rough as you can go with an AK, but they'll still fire. For God's sake, it's an AK-47, who cares how rough it is? You'll hear a couple nay-sayers now and then, but on the whole, most people seem to love them.

That was my experiance with my WASR.Cleared up after about 50rds.Had it several years now, and have shot it ALOT, with the cheapest ammo available, and its been flawless.I love mine. That said, many people havent loved thier WASR, so YMMV.

I purchased a WASR-10 at a Gun Dealer, and got a good deal. It was a total grease pit, and had to be degreased.

The trigger is awful, the stock is too short for me, it makes one loud noise, and it has gone bang on each and every round.

I was not expecting a match rifle, in fact the accuracy at 100 yards is uninspiring, but I am happy with my WASR. I expected a simple and reliable rifle and I got it. My 50 yard target, with the cheapest Chinese SP ammo I could find, is totally adequate for evil tin cans, bottles, or whatever.

With a match rifle I would have all bullets touching at that range, but a match rifle won't function filled with mud.

i just purchased it not too long ago. i guess i got to go pick it up tomorrow after they call it in around noon. i'm looking forwards to perhaps shooting it this following weekend. can i replace the wood with some composite/plastic ones? i'll be looking around for more info on that. i wish my bushy ar15 top receiver was in too, hopefully the same weekend so i can take both of my new guns out to the range. how many rounds would be about right for the break in period on the wasr-10?

i'm liking the scope, hows the recoil on this thing? can't wait...

can't get around the cosmoline, that is just a part of the experience. the wasr's work and that is all there is too it. they are not my favorite ak's but they do work and they do run reliably.

changing furniture is no issue and easy to do, and new furniture is inexpensive.

Yup.Check these guys out. This is where all my synthetic furnture and new grip acme from.Very good quality, solid, nice, stuff, and for a pretty good price IMHO.Lots of furniture and such for the WASRs.http://www.commandarms.com/Default.asp?c=174521

Heres my WASR-10 GP with the First Samco/Command Arms Accesories furnitre, grip, and the Rustoleum high temp BBQ paint finish.

Are they starting to put plastic furniture on them now? I looked at a new WASR-10 Underfolder from CIA today at a local shop and it had a black hand grip, fore grip, and gas tube cover. Wanted to pick it up but didn't have the $479 they were asking for it.

What you are seeing is most likely one of Centurys Yugoslavian AK offerings, not a WASR. The Yugos are light-years more desirable than a WASR.

The Century Romanian WASR 10/63 underfolders do have black synthetic foregrips and handguards. They are installed along with the other 922(r) compliance parts and modifications.

If that is what Hanzerik is looking at, I suggest he look elsewhere, or look for a Century Yugo underfolder for the same price.

$479 for an underfolding WASR? :what::eek::what:
